Devoted to showing artistic works that oppose activity, the exhibition also proposed a politics of radical passivity. A major influence for the exhibition was the titular character of Hermann Melville’s Bartleby the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street. This exhibition catalog presents itself as both sourcebook and reader. Robert Breer: Floats

Catalogue for an exhibition held at Galeria Bonino, New York, February 15-March 5, 1966. This group of self-propelled styrofoam objects was conceived as a single composition which would constantly rearrange itself. Each "float" reverses its direction when it encounters resistance and in this way keeps moving regardless of space restrictions. By their consistent and slow movement, I hoped to put emphasis on change of position rather than motion itself.
