"LA FEMME, LA LUMIERE DE L'HOMME"
by Robert Combas
French painter and sculptor Robert Combas is credited with originating the "figuration libre" movement around 1980, in reaction to the minimalist and conceptual art favored by the establishment. "Basically, I'm trying to be an 80s expressionist" he said in early writings. Combas' work is deeply rooted in depictions of the human figure, generally creating "narratives of war, crime, sex, celebration, and transgression." While drawing on earlier art movements, Combas' work is also influenced by pop culture influences such as graffiti, cartoons, and rock music, so it seems appropriate that he occasionally return the favor with large public works such as "The Woman, the Light of the Man” done above @LaTerrasseDesArchives on Rue des Archives in Paris. @robert_combas/
