Jade cuts the apple into pieces while she listens to Robin, and offers her a slice. She presses it against Robin’s lips. “Still a beautiful liar,” Jade murmurs, her fingertips lingering on the swell of Robin’s cupid bow. “The spotlight is always on you, but it has given you a warped perspective. From your place on the stage, you let yourself be subjected to the audience’s gaze, to their approval. It rules your life, and it is a kind of cage, don’t you agree?” Robin opens her mouth, but she can’t come up with a coherent protest, the taste of apple so heady on her tongue. “Consider my point of view, watching you in the darkness. You can’t even see the shape of me in the crowd. What the shadows conceal allows for freedom. It is in the shadows that life happens. It is where truth thrives, and not the truth that we polish for others, but the truth we hide from.” Jade puts her fingertips underneath Robin’s chin, tilting her face up. “Are you scared of the dark, songbird?”
