Dr Marcia gives her patients all the time in the world. There is no rush at all; all she needs is your full engagement.
In Season Three of The Newsreader, Helen is referred to a psychologist; Dr Marcia Evans, by Bill at work, who his wife’s sister had engaged with during her own struggles.
When Helen attended that first appointment, she had struggled to open up about the complexity of her struggles, but soon, with Dr Marcia’s guidance, Helen was equipped with a tool kit of strategies to manage her emotions and day to day stressors that caused her distress.
This tool kit came through Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, and lead to a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder. As rough as the diagnosis felt for Helen, the more she understood her brain, and found a confidant in Dr Marcia, the more on top of life Helen felt, and she kept returning to Dr Marcia’s office.
Dr Marcia got just how to approach Helen correctly; firmly, fairly with a touch of humour and frankness, and empowered Helen to make decisions for herself. No one was forcing Helen to be there, but for this therapy to work, Helen had to commit to it, and prioritise her mental health.
Dr Marcia was exactly who Helen needed in her life, and Michael Lucas shared on his Twitter that she was named after Dr Marsha Linehan, who was the psychologist who developed Dialectical Behavioural Therapy. Dr Linehan’s story of being institutionalised as a teenager in the 1960s was, in fact, the original inspiration for Helen’s backstory, which Michael, Emma Freeman and Anna Torv drew a lot of knowledge and understanding from in the development process.
Did you learn any new skills from Dr Marcia (and Dr Marsha) to add to your own mental health tool kit? I know I have 💜
