THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP (1982): Robin Williams vaulted to the higher echelon of actors with his performance in George Roy Hill's first-rate adaptation of John Irving's best-selling novel. The screenplay by Steve Tesich traces the lives and relationships of writer T.S. Garp (Williams) and his feminist mother, Jenny (Glenn Close). Close earned an Oscar nomination, as did John Lithgow as Garp's friend, a transgender ex-football player named Roberta Muldoon. Garp is also a wrestler (like Irving in real life), and falls in love with his coach's daughter (Mary Beth Hurt). The movie is a robust and engrossing blend of comedy and drama.
