I'm taking EE 234 (Microprocessor systems) at Washington State University and our final lab project is to build a robotic car that will follow a path. The robot is a kit purchased from Digilent. The robot uses a PIC32MX460F512L micro-controller in a Cerebot MX4cK board. It uses 4 phototransistors as sensors.
