Inventor Oscar and Robozpin
- Oscar is an orphan, living on the streets of Atlas, trying to get by in anyway he can. One day, he tries to hotwire a motorcycle outside an old lab in Mantle and he gets caught
- He gets away, the man who caught him yelling after him but unable to chase him because he’s confined to a wheelchair
- The man checks and realizes that Oscar successfully hotwired the thing, he just didn’t have time to drive away
- The man then sets up a sort of trap, undoing Oscar’s work and moving the bike to somewhere he can monitor it
- A few days later, the boy shows again, but this time the man is prepared and has some kind of trap ready (maybe something that grabs him? Idk, who needs details)
- The trap works and he questions him.
- Man: “Where did you learn to do that?”
- Oscar: “What’s it to you?”
- “I know a thing or two about mechanics, young man, and I think you have a knack for it. Would you like to work for me?”
- “Depends. Does the job come with room and board?”
- “It can if you need it to.”
- “... alright, fine…”
- “Excellent. What’s your name, son?”
- “Don’t call me that… name’s Oscar.”
- “It’s nice to meet you, Oscar. I’m Dr. Polendina, but you can just call me Pietro.”
- After that, Pietro takes Oscar under his wing and teaches him everything he knows, including having him help him on his most valuable project: the Penny project.
- They complete it together and Penny is built, learning to treat Oscar like a brother and Pietro like a father. Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever.
- Pietro falls ill and passes away not long after Penny’s creation. The two siblings bond but there still feels like there’s something missing. Someone.
- One day, Oscar gets an idea
Penny: “I miss father. I wish he could have been built and not born… like me.”
- Light bulb
- Oscar uses everything he remembers from building Penny to build something new. Someone who can look after Penny and Oscar.
- A creation he decides to name Ozpin
- Robot Ozpin starts off very distant, cold and callous. Nothing like Penny when she was first created.
- He’s programmed to protect, but he doesn’t understand how to care. His cane acts as a way to control and use dust like magic, sort of like Weiss’ weapon.
- One day, Oz gets his arm burned and damaged after he fucks up using his fire dust
- Oscar freaks out, constantly reassuring him that he can fix it, apologizing for not accounting for that sort of thing, just totally panicking as he goes to work on fixing the damage
- Oz offers a robotic, puzzled look and asks “Why are you so worried?”
- Without missing a beat, Oscar says, “Because I care about you, you Metal Weirdo!”
- “Care?”
- “Yeah, you know! Caring! Wanting the best for someone! Wanting them not to get hurt or destroyed!”
- Oh. It was nice to be cared about.
- After that, Oscar and Penny take the time to explain and show Oz what emotions look and sound like. They teach him how to laugh, how to sing, how to play games.
- One day, Oz sees Oscar get almost injured and he realizes that he panicked when he thought Oscar was in danger.
So this is what caring feels like.
He starts to feel Human...
