The Insults Book
Reblogged the @lizzzzoo giftset mentioning the insults book from @scrapyardboyfriends and since I haven’t written much this week, decided I’d have a go!
“Eve, get a move on!, you’re gonna be late!” Aaron called up the spiral staircase.
“Coming!” Eve called back. Aaron sighed heavily. He’d forgotten what it was like sharing his home with a teenage girl and the amount of time they spent on their hair. That, coupled with the picky eating habits, the clothes left everywhere and the sass, was beginning to make him regret the offer to look after her for a couple of weeks while his Mum was away.
Aaron drained his cup of tea and grabbed Eve’s school bag from where she’d dumped it in the kitchen. She thundered down the stairs in a pair of heels that were definitely not school regulation. Neither was the makeup. But, a week into her stay with him, he knew that he had to pick his battles.
“Ta Bro,” She said, grabbing the bag and slinging it over her shoulder. She paused by the mirror to check her reflection one more time. “Oh, I’m going to need a tenner for lunch,”
“Of course you do,” Aaron replied wryly. He grabbed his wallet from his back pocket, pulled out a twenty pound note and handed it over. She beamed at him as she pocketed it.
“Did I ever tell you that you’re the best brother ever?”
“Yeah, yeah, go on. School.” Aaron made a shooing motion with his hand. Eve grinned at him and headed for the door. A couple of seconds later he heard her say ‘he’s in there’. Aaron let out another sigh.
“What have I told you about just letting people-”
He stopped short as Robert walked in through the front door. He’d barely changed in the fourteen years since they’d last seen each other in that grim visiting room. He was just a little greyer around the temples and hairline, his stance a little more stooped. He was dressed in jeans and a white shirt, open at the collar, with a burgundy blazer on top. For all the world he looked like the man that Aaron remembered and, although he never mentioned it, the man that still entered his dreams.
“You’re out,” Aaron said. It was all he could say really. This was the man who’d broken his heart. The man who’d stupidly decided that divorce was the way to force him to move on. He’d made his peace with it. At least he thought he’d had. Turns out thinking about someone and then seeing them in the flesh were too entirely different things.
“Last week,” Robert replied. “I…wasn’t sure if you’d still be living here,” He continued, nodding around him. “Eve’s grown”
“It’s been fourteen years Robert,” Aaron said stiffly. “Is small talk all you’ve got?”
Robert floundered for a moment. He reached into the inner pocket of his blazer and, with slightly trembling hands, pulled out a battered looking notebook. Aaron knew what it was at once. It was their insult book. One of their many little in-jokes they’d shared. Like the both of them, the book looked a little worse for wear. But it had also survived. Aaron felt tears come to his eyes.
“You kept it?” He asked quietly. “After all this time?”
“Packed it in my prison bag,” Robert explained. “There was no way I was going to do what I did without keeping something from you,” He looked down at the book with it’s scuffed cover and ‘Insults’ written in black Sharpie by Aaron’s hand. “I was wondering if you’d come to Hotten with me. Go for a pint,”
Aaron took a sharp intake of breath. There was so much that he wanted to say. So much pain and hurt they both needed to process after so long apart. A part of him wanted to shout and scream, tell him to get out and never come back.
“I’ve got some cans in,” He said quietly. “Sit down,” he looked at the book and smiled a little. “Ya idiot,”
