They call it the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event, the sudden mass extinction of three quarters of the planet. For some it meant death, but for one, it meant rebirth.
Her life began with the crack of an egg some time in the Cretaceous. She wasn't given a name. Instead, she was given large, razor sharp teeth for survival. Her life was fairly simple as one of the most well-known dinosaurs in history. Then everything changed in the blink of an eye.
A large asteroid, a hunk of glowing space rock from a dying planet, made contact with Earth's surface. The blast resulting from the hit killed almost all dinosaurs alive at the time. Almost.
Unexplainable properties of the space rock caused a mutation, a rapid evolution. Her life as a dinosaur died with the Cretaceous. But her second life began as something new to planet Earth - humanity.
She continued to survive, day after day, decade after decade. She lived many lives with many names. As civilization continued to grow, cities were gradually built, and there was no room for the ghost of a dinosaur.
So, she found home in the heart of Africa. A dense, secluded area no sane outsider would dare to enter. Though, Niles Caulder was not sane by popular definition.
