Jordan and Caeden met up after school the next day. Jordan had Robyn in tow, stuffed in her backpack, while Caeden was pretty much ignoring the rabbit and chattering on excitedly about how Lynda came to life and he thought that was cool.
“Wait, what? Lynda Lynx came to life? You can’t mean the spirit inside’s all alive right now, right?” Jordan might have been more ready to believe this if it weren’t so preposterous. She could see the dead, and there were many supernatural things they still didn’t understand, however... this was beyond any of that. The dead do not return to living like those who remain on this earth.
“Yeah, that’s exactly what happened. It’s all a big mystery! Dad’s boss has no idea what happened, and dad doesn’t know, and dad said your dad doesn’t know. Nobody knows!” Caeden laughed, not quite grasping how serious of a situation this was. They might have enough room to explain away the dead native, but those children died too recently compared to her. If any of them came back, who knows what sort of hell could be unleashed?
“Well. Caeden. I think we need to talk some about this. Supernatural stuff is really really serious, okay? If there’s something out there that can bring our ghost friends back to life on a whim, don’t you think everyone is in danger?” Jordan grabbed Robyn out of her pack and hugged him close as they continued walking. Robyn had absolutely no idea how to join in on the conversation, so for the moment he was content to observe.
“But why bring Lynda back to life? She doesn’t fight, does she?”
“No, she sees though. She could predict their movements and give everyone else an advantage.”
“But what about Goldie? Wouldn’t it be better to bring him back to life? You said he was really strong! Like, the strongest.”
“I don’t know. I’m not the thing that’s doing this, but there must be a reason they didn’t choose Goldie. At least not yet.”
Robyn tried not to shudder as this conversation progressed. It was getting into uncomfortable territory, and he really didn’t need to be questioned on this.
“Whoa, did your rabbit toy move? Where did you even get that thing?” Caeden poked one of Robyn’s plush cheeks, prompting a recoiling reaction from the toy. “Whoa!!”
“Don’t! Don’t do that.” Robyn grumbled.
“Um. Yeah. His name is Robyn, and he’s haunted too. I found him with Lynda a few days ago, when I was staying overnight with my dad at his work. He was really hard to clean up-”
“I’m right here, Jordan.”
“-But I think he looks nice now. Anyway, um, there’s your house Caeden. I’d better be getting home, too.”
Reluctantly, Caeden agreed. This was where they usually had to split up anyway, otherwise Caeden would have to backtrack to get home. Once the other child got through the door, he stopped thinking about the supernatural junk that just got explained to him. He had simply decided that he wasn’t going to worry about it. Foolproof plan, right? Right. What could possibly go wrong?
