Richmond Rock Lotto Show benefiting Girls Rock! RVA
This Friday, I (LJ) will be playing in this year's Richmond Rock Lotto Show benefiting Girls Rock! RVA, a musically oriented, youth empowerment non-profit dedicated to empowering girls, gender non-conforming, and trans youth to collaborate creatively in an environment of mutual respect and positive self-expression.
If you aren't familiar with Rock Lotto, it's exactly what it sounds like: The names of various RVA musicians are thrown in a hat and randomly drawn into groups of 4-5 members. These bands are given around 3 weeks to put together a 15-20 minute set. It's a fun way to experiment with other genres of music and get to play with a bunch of people you wouldn't easily have an opportunity to work with otherwise. There is also a creative problem solving element to it.
My rock lottery band is called Mumblécore Porn and features Ashley Gb from Wood Face, no-wave violinist Dada Gauche, and singer Celeste Jackson. I'm not even sure how to describe our sound, to call it willfully chaotic might be an understatement.
