Eddie Murphy recently appeared on the BBC Radio 1Xtra breakfast show and revealed that he would like to put a band together and perform in the UK, provided his songs continue to ‘heat up’. Didn’t know that Eddie Murphy made music? Neither did I! The 53 year old actor has had a handful of hits in the states and even recorded a track with Snoop Dogg/Lion called Red Light.
Although some would applaud Eddie Murphy for his ambition, it appears that Johnny Depp would not approve. He has described the notion of actors using their celebrity status to form bands as ‘disgusting’. Although he is himself both an actor and a musician, he has explained that he prefers to collaborate with his musician friends without being the centre of attention. He has surprised audiences by appearing on-stage alongside the likes of Ryan Adams, Aerosmith and Marilyn Manson.
Another surprising collaboration in the headlines this week is Pharrell Williams and former Vice President Al Gore’s campaign for a second round of Live Earth concerts on all seven continents to raise awareness of climate change. The event is scheduled for 18 June and will be televised across 193 television networks. The acts involved are yet to be announced.
Popular Scottish music festival Rock Ness was also scheduled for this June, however for the second consecutive year it has been cancelled. The line-up for the 2013 edition of the event included Basement Jaxx, Fatboy Slim and Ellie Goulding. This year’s cancellation is believed to be due to financial difficulties and it was postponed last year to prevent clashing with the World Cup and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
This year’s Sonisphere UK festival has also been cancelled due to scheduling conflicts, as well as difficulties securing a satisfactory line-up. Fear not though, Sonisphere isn’t the only place you’ll be able to rock out this summer. This year’s Download Festival line-up is looking good so far and if you’re into the more experimental side of things like me, Tech-Fest 2015 is the place to be!
Looking for something more refined? Why not check out Damon Albarn’s Alice in Wonderland inspired musical at the Manchester International Festival this July?
