#rock pooling

I went rock pooling for the first time in a hot min and I am so glad I did. I found a metric ton of sea slugs. Mostly Sea Hares (Aplysia punctata) but also a little herd of Grey Sea Slugs (Aeolidia filomenae).

This years best low tide forage was at Kinghorn Beach in Fife, Scotland.

My favourite find of the day was a super colourful juvenile rock lobster <3  I also found a big yellow nudi too, so the whole morning was a total win!

last time I went rock-pooling (I live right next to a beach don’t judge me) I found a crab and everyone else who tried to hold it had to pass it on because the damn funky little thing kept trying to jump out of our hands

but like the true cancerian I am I gently took the sweet little dude and he held still in my hands, sat there in the sun and my palm like he was finally at peace. True solidarity between the human crabs and the crab crabs

The rocks were littered with brittlestars when we did our low tide forage and I thought they’d be the perfect subject for Inktober prompt: Frail

I did a lot of my Inktober pieces this year digitally as I haven’t been using Procreate for very long and really felt I could use the practice!

I also managed to squeeze in a morning of rock pooling whilst my cabin mates were out on one of the ferries (was too choppy for me).

It was drizzly and kinda freezing but I had so much fun seeking out macro life in abundance <3

So many creeture in the rock and pool. And such creepers too.

Am on holiday for the first time in five years and am so happy to be able to go rock-pooling again. Not the best time of year for it, but even then I sat on a rock, looked down and there was a juvenile pipefish just…right there! I haven’t seen a wild one in years - so lucky!
