I had to work yesterday, which was the actual Record Store Day, but I bought records from 3 different stores on Friday and today to make up for it! I picked up a nice mix of genres. There’s the incomparable Pearl Bailey performing selections from Porgy&Bess, The chronically under appreciated, Rachel Sweet(John Waters appreciated her, she sang the Hairspray theme). There’s classic Gang of Four and a favorite of my late high school years, The Surf Punks. We wrap it up with the score to Luchino Visconti’s film, ‘The Damned’ and from the oddities bin at Rock-n-Roll Graveyard, the original radio broadcast of the Hindenburg disaster. The newscaster that was covering the landing live on air is the answer to my favorite trivia question I’ve never been asked; who famously said, “Oh the humanity!” when the Hindenburg exploded? Answer, Herb Morrison.
