Rocket × Reader comfort and angst

The phight was over. Everyone else had already regrouped, licking wounds and bragging about shots landed and points scored—everyone except Rocket. Usually, he would be alongside Sword, trash-talking opposing teams and useless teammates. You knew better than to think he’d just left for the sake of it. Rocket always came back, crawling through the fire to show everyone he was capable.
So where was he? Where was the Rocket that told everyone that he was fine, with the classic cocky smile plastered on his face?
The front door to his apartment (that he shared with his adoptive father, Zuka) was left ajar. “What the hell?...” You mutter. Crossroads was no place to be leaving doors unlocked. “Rocket?” You called lightly, tapping on the door of his room.
Silence.
Your brows furrow as you press your ear against the door to hear if Rocket is in there. The door slid open as you pushed your body against it-it was unlocked.
“Hey, just checking-”
You froze in your tracks.
Time seemed to freeze, too.
Rocket was sitting on the edge of his bed, curled in a protective position. His prosthetic limbs strewn across the floor, his room looked like a tornado had just passed. His body remained still.
He looked so…small without all that tech on him. He looked real.
Rocket’s hand jerked towards the door where you were standing. “What the fuck…” he rasped, voice cutting through you like a blade. “Get out.” Rocket’s fingers curled into his thigh, looking away from you as he gritted his teeth.
“Rocket, I can’t leave you alone in this state, I-”
“GET OUT.” his voice cracked, sharp with something far worse than any level of anger-fear. He fully turned his body now, scrambling to find a sheet or blanket, wrenching the piece of cloth over himself like it could erase what you had just witnessed. “You weren’t supposed to see me like this!” A pitiful cry escaped his throat as he tried to hold back sobs.
Your heart slammed against your ribcage. Your hands trembled at the sight of your partner hunched over, head in his hands, clawing at his skin. You walk slowly and cautiously towards him, like how one would carefully walk toward a stray cat they had found on the side of the road to not startle it. The sound of your footsteps seemed like the loudest thing at the moment. He stared at you as you walked over, chest rising fast with ragged breaths.
And for the first time, the frenzy in his eyes dissipated. Rocket looked like he wanted to vanish. Not fight, not shout, but to just sink into the floor and disappear.
You sat down next to him on the bed. Rocket flinched as he felt your weight sink down next to him.
“Don’t say some sappy bullshit like you’re gonna accept me or whatever sweet crap. I don’t wanna hear it.” he scoffeds, low and bitter while looking down at his lap, shifting uncomfortably. Oh, how he hated this. Hated how he sounded like that inphernal back in Playground, hoping to be saved and asking for all the pain to stop. He hated feeling so weak, so exposed and drowning in self-doubt. “Look at me,” he let out a self-deprecating chuckle. ”I look like a screwed up Blackrock lab experiment. Im missing half my limbs and i’m nothing without all that scrap metal! Is this what you wanted to see?!”
You slowly hold his hand(the remaining one) and squeezed it.
“No. That’s not what I want to see.”
His shoulders slumped. “Don’t lie.”
“I’m not.”
You continued clutching his hand, using your thumb to run over his knuckles. “Do you know who I fell for?” You asked him. Rocket looks into your eyes, his own eyes flattened; his face hardened in concentration, searching for any malice or sarcasm in them, but he only saw a pair of loving eyes boring into his.
Rocket quickly looked back down, rapidly blinking away re-forming tears.
You interlock your horns into his, resting your forehead against his. You could hear his breath hitch. Rocket leans into you, slowly and warily, like he might break if he got too close.
“Rocket,” you said gently, “I fell for the inphernal who limps off to suffer in silence so he doesn’t worry others, not just the fearless, hard armoured inphernal you try to be all the time. I love all parts of you, not just the ones you deem the most ‘acceptable’ to yourself.”
“That just makes me sound pathetic.”
“No, it doesn’t.”
His eyes flicked backed to yours in intrigue. You know you were breaking his walls down.
Prosthetics or not, he would still be the same, beloved Rocket. With or without all that tech, you knew you would still love him no matter what.
Then he broke.
“I’m scared,” he choked out. “Not of death, but of you seeing me like this and leaving when you find out i’m not as strong and capable I paint myself to be.”
You chuckle, ruffling his hair. “No one is invincible, Rocket, and you sure don’t need to be.” He leans into your hand, eyes closing. He gave up on trying to hide the cracks in his soul.
For now, he just lets himself be loved by you.
FUCKK THIS IS SO CORNY IM CRYING
