LAUNCH PAD: MADISON CUNNINGHAM - “ALL AT ONCE”
When Orange County native Madison Cunningham picked up a guitar at the age of seven, she was following in the footsteps of her musical father and a familial hobby that extended to singing and performing with her siblings at church. But the discovery of luminaries like Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan shifted Cunningham’s desires as a teenager and propelled her from a simple hobby to a true passion for songwriting. A happenstance meeting with producer Tyler Chester led to her 2017 debut EP, Love, Lose, Remember and she also became a regular musician on American Public Media’s nationwide variety show, ‘Live From Here.’. Now signed to Verve Forecast and on tour with The Punch Brothers, Cunningham is pushing the boundaries of her creativity in intriguing ways.
Decadent guitar strings cascade as latest single, “All At Once”, builds steadily into a rising crest that reaches an echoing point - and this is all before Cunningham’s voice even comes into play. Once she arrives, the track takes on a fuller form as her quietly dynamic vocals and guitar work undulate together in this story of a heart tumbling into the unknown. It’s unhurried yet powerful, flowing from calm observations to peaks of intensity and back around again. Reverb works seamlessly with repetition when she sings “looks like it’s gonna fall on us/it’s gonna fall if we let it...” and the meaning of her words begin to overlap in ways that go beyond metaphor, lyrics toppling down one after the other. Potent and compelling, this song reveals the continuing evolution of Cunningham as a singer-songwriter.
