Rod Phillips left for the trip on Dec. 13 and is still out of the country, his office said
Ontario Finance Minister Rod Phillips travelled outside of the country for a personal vacation recently, his office said Tuesday.
The trip was taken after the legislative session ended earlier this month, Phillips said in a statement on Tuesday, adding that it was "previously planned."
"Immediately following the end of the Legislative Session, which occurred on December 8th, my wife and I departed on a previously planned personal trip outside of the country," Phillips wrote in the four-paragraph statement.
"Had I been aware then of the eventual December 26th provincewide shutdown, we would have cancelled the trip.

There’s a Simpsons reference for everything.
The Doug Ford government has announced it’s reviewing provincial legislation that protects endangered species in order to reduce red tape and find “efficiencies for businesses.”
The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks on Friday released a discussion paper on the 10-year review of the province’s Endangered Species Act, kicking off a 45-day public consultation period. The review will look at ways to ensure “positive outcomes” for at-risk species, increase “efficiencies in service delivery,” and streamline approval processes, all while maintaining an “effective government oversight role.”
It will also try to ensure species assessments are based on “up-to-date science,” and that meet “multiple objectives” for ecosystem management. There are currently 243 species on the province’s Species at Risk list.
The province is consulting with Ontarians to improve the “effectiveness” of environmental protections and to ensure a “balanced approach” to improving the environment and economy, Environment Minister Rod Phillips said in a statement.
Comments about what a horrible plan this is can be submitted here until March 4, 2019.

Rod Phillips is due back in Canada on Thursday, Ontario premier tells reporters
Ontario Premier Doug Ford is acknowledging he knew his finance minister, Rod Phillips, was outside Canada before the news of Phillips's Caribbean vacation began making headlines Tuesday.
Phillips, Ford said, never told him he was leaving.
"I did call him shortly after he arrived and I asked him and he said he was away," Ford told reporters Wednesday.
"My mistake, and I take full responsibility. At that time, I should have said get your backside back into Ontario and I didn't do that."
The premier now says a "very tough conversation" is in store when Phillips returns from his trip taken while Ontarians were urged to hunker down amid rising cases of COVID-19.

The claim is '100 per cent false.'
The PCs are backtracking from their censorship of the topic of climate change, with a spokesperson first saying that the party never issued the order before Rod Phillips, Ontario’s Minister of the Environment, Conservation, and Parks, said that the order was “a mistake.”
A memo from PC Party staff about the issue made a wild claim, stating that “integrity, accuracy, professionalism and the highest possible ethical standards are core principles of [their] work.”
