All these stories with the soft au bots meeting the reader's toddlers have me sobbing, could you imagine one of the babies getting so familiar and comfortable with a bot they call them daddy?? Having to explain to the bot what that word means if they don't know?? THEIR REACTION IF THEY DO KNOW WHAT IT MEANS???? AUGHBJFSJK 😭

🤣 human parent is just mortified. @irreproduciblemagnet helped with Steejaw’s dialogue and mannerisms since I’m not that familiar with him and still need to watch RID2015, but PUPPY that turns into a vehicle not a big puppy. I don’t claim to understand the logic there, but alrighty

• “Here we go. Apple juice and Cheerios,” you coax handing over a sippy cup to your toddler on her blanket. Or trying to. Taking a lunch break after washing your assignment to work the kinks out of your back before you tackle waxing and oiling his joints, you hear him rumble as your daughter’s bottom lip wobbles. “You like Cheerios,” you protest, shoulders hunching. Ready for the incoming terrible twos fit as you scramble to figure out the imagined issue. Right color cup, right flavor of Cheerios. And she screams before you can figure it out.

• Finial ears flattening back as your youngling wails, he slowly stands and moves closer. “You’ve been working so hard, love. Here, let me take her for you.” He coaxes, playing Unicron’s advocate as you go still even though he knows you won’t actually hand him the youngling. “Oh, sweetspark, your poor carrier is spoiling you too much.” He croons as you heave a sigh at him. But it’s gratifying that you don’t immediately snatch your youngling away like you had the first couple of times he’d gotten anywhere close. Now, though? You trust him as novel as it is. Watch him closely, but allow him to play with your bitlet, dangling a plush rabbit and watching the youngling grab at it. And the little one whimpers, before reaching for him to make you both freeze.

• Bending to pick her up, she cries even harder, little fingers grabbing as she reaches for your assigned mech. And calls Steeljaw ‘daddy,’ to your absolute horror. Shoulders hunching, you pray that he didn’t understand her babbling. There’s a chance he didn’t. Glancing up at him, his expression gives away that not only did he hear that, but he knows what a daddy is. Hear him rumbling before he mass shifts to startle you. Had known they could do that, but you’ve never seen him bother.

• Bending to pick up your youngling’s blanket to shield her from his sharp claws, he reaches and you tense. Those strange, alien eyes of yours meeting his, the fear in them making him hesitate. Over the months, you’d started smiling at him, joking and had relaxed some. But he’s still alien to you, isn’t he? Still doesn’t belong here. Still not trusted that much. “I’m sure she didn’t mean to call me that. Younglings say things sometimes,” he murmurs, tail flicking slightly. “It’s nothing to worry over.”

• Watching his ears flick slightly, his strange features settling into his pretend sympathy, you’d seen something real in those optics for a second. A hunger that makes you jittery, sends your heart racing. He keeps insisting that he’s here on Earth wanting a new home. To belong. It’s hard to get a read on him when you can’t tell when he’s being sincere, because he’s always agreeable, always coaxing you. Inhaling slowly as your daughter bounces in your arms, whimpering, you lean ever so slightly. Let your upper arm brush his chassis as you look anywhere but up at him. And she’s reaching to pat him as she babbles, venting to him in toddler nonsense as he goes still before a blanket wrapped hand lifts to almost touch her. Stopping just short.
