Remembering bass guitarist Louis Johnson. Louis worked as a studio session musician on many albums including Michael Jackson’s ‘Off the Wall’(1979) and ‘Thriller’(1982), George Benson’s ‘Give Me the Night’(1980), Donna Summer’s self-titled album ‘Donna Summer’(1982), and Aretha Franklin’s ‘Love All the Hurt Away’(1981). @rodtempertonmusic “The Lady In My Life” was recorded at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angeles, 1982. Michael, under the guidance of Quincy and Rod, recorded take after take, but the results were unconvincing. The sadness of “She’s Out of My Life” (1979) had touched Michael so deeply that he had been in tears at the end of every performance. “The Lady in My Life” made life more difficult for him, as if he had difficulty immersing himself in the ambience of love tinged with sensuality that is peculiar to the song. Having failed to achieve the desired effect, Quincy took Michael aside and gave him a simple instruction: he should imagine he was begging someone, literally. Michael agreed, on condition that all the lights were turned out. His shyness in the studio gained the upper hand, and it was only in such darkness that he felt he could express himself and produce the desired vocal sounds. The band put together to accompany him (which included: Greg Phillinganes, David Paich, Steve Porcaro, Paul Jackson, Louis Johnson, Jeff Porcaro, and Michael Boddicker) was reduced to a minimum. “The Lady in My Life” was a result of pared-down sessions, in which skilful dosing of the synthesisers lent the song an unexpected melancholy quality. The first mix of “The Lady In My Life” lasted 6’08. Listening to album’s first master, Quincy, Rod, Michael and Bruce all decided to cut the song. The second verse and chorus were removed, thus changing the song’s dynamics although a good third was cut in the final version. “The Lady In My Life” succeeded in retaining its dramatic intensity.
