“Umm...it’s Amell, isn’t it?” asked a timid voice.
Katerina reluctantly pulled herself out of her magical theory book and sighed. “Yes?” she replied, lifting her head to look at the stranger shuffling nervously by the side of the Kat’s book-laden table.
“Oh, s-sorry!” the girl stammered. “I didn’t mean to disturb you, I just...um…”
Kat tilted her head curiously to the side and gave the stranger a quick once over. She’d seen her before working around the kitchens: a petite Elven girl with shortly cropped brown hair and wide, doe-like brown eyes.
“No, it’s alright,” Kat reassured her. “Can I help you with something?”
The elf twisted her hands anxiously in front of her and cast a few quick glances about the library’s quiet floor before turning back to Kat and lowering her voice: “Could I talk to you about...about the Inquisitor’s brother, my lady?”
Immediately, Kat’s body tensed and her brow shot up in surprise. “...What did you want to know?” she asked cautiously.
The girl flushed red all the way to the tips of her long, graceful ears. “N-nothing! Only...well, I’ve seen you speak with him before. And I--I wanted to know if you knew what he...liked. He’s very handsome,” she said, her last comment barely above a whisper.
Katerina smiled to hide a sharp pang of...jealousy? Something. Not like she had a right to be jealous.Irrick was hardly exclusive to her, and they’d only had a few conversations. Still, the thought of anyone trying to get close to him felt like a blade twisting in her gut.
“Music,” said Kat simply. “He likes music.” She felt her heart sinking as she spoke. Who are you trying to fool, Kat? He doesn’t belong to you. He never will. The words cut deeply and Kat felt her face grow hot. “If you’ll excuse me,” said Kat as she hastily got up from the table and started toward the stairs.
“Oh, well, um, thank you!” the elf-girl called after her. Kat did not turn back around, but acknowledged her thanks with a half-hearted wave of her hand.
When she finally reached her living quarters, Kat sat on her bed and rested her face in her hands. And it wasn’t until then, in the quiet solitude, that she let her heart ache and started to weep.
