my housemate just revealed to me that he has 30 quid to last until january, most of my friends arent fairing much better (the rent on student properties in my area has risen like 100 quid a month in less than a year, which is fucked lmao)
yes one of my younger brothers is in a similar situation!
i obviously don't have to tell you this but the increasing commercialisation of higher education partnered with a cost of living crisis and a rent crisis means we've got a whole generation of young people who are being robbed of the joy of learning which is (controversial, i know) what university should be about.
whenever i hear kids talking about university nowadays it's rarely about the course itself or about the things they're researching or learning, and that's not because they don't want to learn or don't appreciate it, it's because they're bombarded with so much other shit that it's hard to survive on a day-to-day basis, let alone actually study and all that.
it makes me so mad that universities focus on silly things like ~employability~ and league tables and how 'profitable' certain courses are (as if that's something that can be measured).
and it pisses me off more that in other areas of life such as the housing market, greedy people are exploiting students who they know have limited options - and beggars can't be choosers - and who typically lack experience of the housing market and their rights as tenants. it's just... objectively horrendous.
