Have you ever considered using ONScripter?
I had a quick look at onscripter on wiki, and the thing is, it doesn't seem to be that powerful. the thing about ren'py is it's written in python, and at any time you can stop using ren'py specific syntax and doing ren'py specific things, and start coding directly in python to create functions and classes etc, and write things for the vn from scratch.
like, rogue of heart is a visual novel first and foremost, sure, but it is also a collection of minigames and other interact-able things that a visual novel engine would never have in their own little engine code, and it doesn't really look like onscripter would support these sorts of additions
but that's not to say that onscripter doesn't look perfectly fine as a vn engine? like, I'd love it give it a look! I just don't think it would bring what we need right now to the table, and I've already done a large chunk of the programming for rogue of heart in python. thanks for the heads up, though :)
