I usually will get a song I like off of youtube and then google "youtube to mp3 converter". Sites change all of the time so I use a different one each time. But once I have the mp3 file I upload it to jukehost. Copy the URL for the song and then paste it here:
do you have tips on how to deal with an rp partner who has to make everything about their muses? whenever i have an idea/plot for my muse, they always have to do something more dramatic for theirs so the focus is on their muse instead
oooo boy have i dealt with people like this before ! ( i've probably also BEEN this person tbh ) . honestly , if you think you can gain anything from it / they'd be the kind of person to take on and respond to constructive criticism , then absolutely 10000% approach them gently and tell them about your experience and list out examples of when you've been effected by this behaviour .
i'll admit though , even sometimes with the talk . . it won't be enough . people need to realise some things for themselves , and they don't realise what they're doing until they really take a step back and say ' hold on .. did i just hijack this whole plot ?? ' ' hold on , not many people are wanting to plot with me . . so maybe theres something more here that im missing '
self realisation and self reflection can be a beautiful thing , but no harm in giving an extra push to show this person how it can be slightly exhausting and difficult for u to want to plot with them !
more importantly , i hope YOU'RE ok and i hope you're giving urself and ur characters the worth and attention they deserve too . no one character is more important than another , and i'm sorry ur having to deal with this potential feeling of that . i hope it goes well !
Mae presents you with a guide on → Getting into a canon character
*This guide is merely made up of my own ideas and opinions. These may not apply to every roleplayer.
Taking on a canon character can be a nerve-wracking task. Whether the setting be AU or canon, every character has their own way of being, that should be showcased, no matter the scenario.
This guide is going to act as a foundation in aiding you in feeling more comfortable with getting into and playing canon characters. Instead of focusing on one canon character from a specific verse or fandom, this guide can be applied to any and all canon characters in general.
TAKE IN THE ORIGINAL CONTENT - Read/Watch/Play whatever content (TV show, book, movie, etc) the specific character is involved in. Try and solidify that interest and inspiration you first felt to play them. This will help you through working and editing your muse. Secondly, note as much as you can about the character. How they talk: Do they swear? Put more emphasis on certain words? Speak with confidence or timidly? How they move - Fluid? Stiff? Clumsy? Some of these may be easier to note than others depending on the content but make sure to take in as much as you can. It will make your writing of the muse a lot easier later on.
FAN MADE CONTENT - Viewing fan made content can aid you in recognising key traits of a character. For example, fan made videos usually highlight key scenes and moments the character has been through and how they have reacted and developed. Recognising these areas is pivotal to understanding the character and why they act in certain ways. Understanding the why behind your new muses’ actions can help in writing how they would react to the new situations you will be putting them in. Well written fanfiction can be a wonderful tool in gaining a better grasp on the canon muses' voice, while also helping explore how character would react in certain situations that maybe weren't explored in the canon verse. (Helpful ways in finding what could be well written are looking at the amount of comments or ‘hits’ a story has).
PLAYLISTS - First, look for those already made, by fellow players or just other fans, and see what kind of music they have chosen. Do the songs match up to issues they have had to face? Or do they just represent the character’s music tastes? Listening to these kind of playlists allows you to get into the character’s mind. Whilst listening, start brainstorming why these pieces of music may resonate with the character. Then, when you think you’ve got it, make your own. Put everything you’ve learned about the backstory of this character into music. (Try pages such as Spotify, 8tracks, youtube, etc).
OBSERVE OTHERS - Scrutinise how other players take on the character. Plagiarising another person’s work is always frowned upon and in no way should you be doing this, but merely watching someone whose characterisation inspires you can definitely help in your own portrayal. Pinpoint what it is about the writer’s depiction that you find to be ideal to the character. Is it the way they have them speak? The way they write their movements? Whatever it is, take note and work on emulating it in your own writing.
READ GUIDES - If the character you're attempting to play is popular and widely-played in the RPC then there should be at least one guide created by a fellow player with hints and tips about to play them (Try searching through tumblr for ‘character name’ guide, asking RPHs for such or googling it). If you're able to find a pre-written guide, read it, but with a grain of salt. While these guides can bring ideas you might not have thought of before, they're still just the ideas and advice of one player, and may not completely align with your own personal understanding and representation of the character.
That should work as a general foundation for playing a canon character. I hope that this was able to help a few of you. Thanks for reading and a big thank you to @rewritwriter for her help!
Sorry this is in a submission, it got too long for the ask box, I hope that’s okay.
I have multiple characters in one RP. I just dropped one because of time constraints, and when I chose to drop him, I had been debating between him and another of my characters because I didn’t have much of a muse for either of them. In the end I chose the one I did because he was a less important character for the plot and I wasn’t leaving any plots in the lurch, and I hoped that dropping him would give me more time and energy to focus into the other so that I could re-find my muse for him. He’s a main canon character in the fandom and there are still unresolved issues with another character which are proving difficult to solve so I wanted to make sure, for her sake, that they could be sorted out IC before I considered dropping him. However, it’s now been a couple of weeks and I still haven’t got him back. I feel incredibly stressed out whenever I think about it, and when I told my partner, she said we would sort something out but we still haven’t talked about it. I don’t know whether I should keep trying, and if I do what I can do to regain that muse, or if I should just drop him, too, but I know if I do that, he’s a popular enough character that someone else will take him up and I might regret it.
Hi there, Anon! Don’t worry about it, submitting me things is totally fine.
Firstly, I would recommend that you speak to your partner and maybe the admins of the group once more. I know you’ve already gone through this step but just make it very clear that this whole ordeal is stressing you out and so you may need to no longer play the character.
Please try and remember that roleplaying is supposed to be fun, I know that you are just trying to do the right thing by your partner but you shouldn’t be getting stressed over things that are supposed to be enjoyable.
I can understand the fear of someone taking up that character if you let them go (nevermind how selfish it may seem, we all feel that way). I would suggest that you take a step back. Let the admins know that you need to take some time away from that character for the while (maybe even the roleplay?) as you don’t feel like you can be giving him everything you could right now. They may be a little cautious if you don’t know how long you may need but good admins should understand that people need a break.
Let them know, take a step back and just relax. Concentrate on the characters that you are still managing to enjoy at the moment and, if you decide that you would still like to keep this character, start to work on getting back your muse. I have a guide here on trying to get your muse back but just remember to take your time if you decide to try again.
Take as much time as you need and don’t allow anyone else to push you into going back. You will know when you’ve got your muse back, not them. If, after you attempt to get your muse back, you are still feeling stuck, I think you should have a good think about whether you would be okay with dropping him. You may get a little sad if someone else takes him up but sometimes we have to just admit defeat and move on.
I hope this helped you anon, I tried to touch on every base.
Some advice for tumblr roleplayers under the age of sixteen, especially those joining the community for the first time.
I've been part of the tumblr roleplay community for a little over a year, and I'm turning sixteen in less than two months. In that time, I've learned a few things I thought I'd share! Though in many ways the roleplay experience similar for any age, there are a few things that younger roleplayers, especially those new to tumblr roleplay, might want to keep in mind.
Follow the rules
I know underage smut (roleplaying sexual scenes when one or more roleplayers is under the age of eighteen) is a controversial topic right now. I don't want to get into all of the details of it, but FuckYeahRoleplayAdvice made a really informative video here. Basically, if you're under the age of eighteen, don't risk it.
Rules don't just go for underage smut, though. There are quite a few roleplays that don't accept players under the age of sixteen or players under the age of eighteen. In that kind of situation, it doesn't matter how mature you are. If the admins made a decision to not allow roleplayers under a certain age into the game, respect that, find another roleplay, and do not give the admins a hard time about it or pretend to be a certain age in your app.
Most of the times the rules aren't meant to be personal. They're not meant to exclude people, or make them feel like they aren't good enough. They're there to keep people safe, happy, and comfortable. And yes, sometimes it's hard to walk away from a partner or a group that's not comfortable roleplaying with you because of your age, but in the long run, it's the right thing to do.
Don't do anything that makes you uncomfortable
It doesn't matter if your partner is the greatest writer or the nicest person in the world. If a plot you're doing with them makes you uncomfortable, or you're experiencing anything in this post, you have to message the player and let them know how you're feeling. Roleplaying should be fun, and it shouldn't make you nervous, anxious, or uncomfortable. Sometimes, in a situation where you're not enjoying yourself, it's time to drop the plot altogether.
On that note, never let anyone pressure you into doing something you're not completely into. If someone suggests a plot that you're just not feeling, you have no obligation to do it with them.
Remember: good roleplaying comes from practice and effort, not age
You are not any worse or better than other roleplayers because of your age. While there are special considerations you need to remember because you are a younger roleplayer, at the end of the day, your writing is likely the same quality as your partner's. Don't be intimidated that your partner might have more experience than you. And if you feel that your writing really isn't where you want it to be, remember that there is a learning curve, and by putting time and effort into your writing, you'll see improvement.
I hope this was helpful advice! If you have any questions about anything, feel free to contact me and I hopefully will be able to clarify things.
Short list of things to help with tumblr rpers. Some of these things can probably be found on various other rp help blogs but these are things that I have picked up/figured out/or personally use while roleplaying on tumblr. So ya know, here ya are.
Aesthetic based resources;
messletters --- you can find symbols, edit your text to look really coolin about a million ways and just about anything else text based here.
visitor/online tracker --- you can customize this however you'd like, it's just a tracker that shows how many people are viewing your page at the time.
follower tracker --- same site and works the same as the online tracker. Displays and tracks your followers in case you're into that.
cursors-4u --- cursors! just pick the cursor you want, and copy the code you want, and from there follow the application instructions. Usually it's just to post them into your description or your custom html.
RPers dash help;
xkit --- hopefully you know about this but if not bless you poor baby here is xkit. it's an extension for tumblr that will fix your dash and more basically.
Reblogging as text ---this is important for anyone knew to rping who reblogs as a link and can't figure out when the post theiy're reblogging is being cut off.
Trimming your posts --- please trim your posts, geesh.
Other things;
befunky ---a very good, free resource where you can edit icons; you can make them beautiful, round the corners, do whatever you want here. Helpful if your muse has a little known fc and you have to make your own icons, but don't have PS.
tumblr static img uploader ---if you're editing a page and you need to use image urls to insert your images, it's useful to put them into tumblrs static image uploader first. That way you don't lose them if the original site or poster deletes the image, and tumblrs static uploader is hosting, so it will load quickly~.
theme-hunter ---really the only theme resource I use; I get all of my themes and pages from here about 99% of the time.
kiwi6 --- it's a site that you can hotlink music from as an alternative to dropboxing your music into a music player for tumblr. It's quick and easy and it stores all of the songs you upload.
billy music player --- a small, easy to use music player that's pretty popular on tumblr. As long as you use a hotlinked song (from dropbox or kiwi6) they should play without buffering and you just post the embedded code into your description box.
pro tip: every character in a rp tends to have something interesting or unique about them. if your character is having a conversation with theirs and you feel like it isn't going anywhere, try to find a way to bring up that unique detail. for example, if their character is a star basketball player, if your character brings up basketball somehow, it could lead to a much more interesting conversation. of course, if it doesn't work for the conversation, never force anything. but if you can find a way to make it work, you have the potential for a much more meaningful interaction!
i've seen a lot of people in roleplays make a post and they use like a weird type of font in the text? It's atalics and something else, and it's really small? I know this doesn't say much but do you maybe know what im talking about, and could tell me how to do it?
There are two ways to make font small. You can use the code so it looks like this:
