My first “Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings” will take place in October,2018. For 3 months I have been learning notes and rhythms and doing some light analysis. Over the next months, I return to my serial killer book to dive deep. Here is what I want to explore:
Poets
- Pastoral- Charles Cotton (1630–1687)
- Noctourne- Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809–1892)
- Elegy- William Blake (1757–1827)
- Dirge- Lyke Wake Dirge, Anonymous (15th century)
- Hymn- Ben Jonson (1572–1637)
- Sonnets- John Keats (1795–1821)
Some other goals?
Talk with my co-star about his apporach to the music
Note to self: be mindful of cultural theft and stereotypes. A piece of music that is inspired by another culture or group may still have merit and it is imperative to conmunicate the all the facets of a work of art. Above all else, the original culture must be shared and elevated before sharing a controversial work.
Spent time today working on being a 9 year old farm-boy whose dog died. It’s a sad little vignette. It is my first time playing someone of such a young age. I watch my kids to try to get a sense of the exuberance of a child.
We have spent time looking at constellations before bedtime this past fall and if I walk out my front door and turn to face our house, you see Polaris right above it. Looking to the right is Cassiopia and as you turn, you see Orion and then other constellations until you return to face north. It is that memory that I hold as I circle the stage in the opening scene.
