~ Rolling Sun ~
‘Beautiful but infuriating’ ... Review done. Oh how I wish it was that easy. Honestly though, this game looks absolutely amazing graphically but just doesn’t hit the mark with actual gameplay. It’s not that the levels are ridiculously hard or anything, there’s just so many issues with responsiveness and mechanics that it really (and I mean REALLY REALLY) gets on your nerves.
That was possibly the most cryptic and least informative bundle of words I’ve ever written ... to the beginning I go then.
So, let’s do this properly. On any given day me choosing a game to play is basically an hour or so of scrolling through my library a good couple hundred times till I land on something that piques my interest. During this particular scroll fest I settled on ‘Rolling Sun’ - an adventure type game where you roll a satisfying little ball around.
It doesn’t take long to find my first issue with this game - audio settings, or the lack of. As soon as loading is done, music starts creeping in. It’s nice and all but it’s a fade in and suddenly you’re being deafened. I don’t mind a bit of game music but if it’s there, it needs a setting. A trip to the settings page results in a swift u-turn to my desktop volume mixer which happens to bring another point to my attention - this game is definitely NOT tab friendly (*sigh*).
Anyway, after saving my ears and watching my desktop re-arrange itself several times, it’s time to play. Now like I said, this game is very visually pleasing and I’d happily have a poster or two on my walls, just as long as it’s not from that stage I hit where it was more juddery than the old VCR pauses and no amount of refreshing helped. Apart from this, all good on the graphics side of things.
Now we hit the point where I fall out of love with this little roller. I am a ball - A ball I am controlling with a gamepad to roll, jump and hover into little ball collectibles across each level. Pretty standard right? Right, until it starts making you go the complete opposite direction to where you had in mind. Want to go down to that ramp? Nope, you get treated to a trip straight up and into no-mans-land. Want to jump onto that ledge? Okay, let’s go and roll off to our demise. Want to go back a tiny bit and get that collectible? Tough luck, no momentum here. How about forward after just being needlessly rescued? Nope, still no momentum, have fun jumping around to get going. Half of my deaths were due to precisely these reasons and it gets pretty wearing pretty quickly (and yes I did swap controllers just to make sure my anologue stick wasn’t screwing me over).
On top of this, when you get sent off the edge of that cliff you’ve just spent 20 minutes trying to get to, your helpful sunny ball retriever doesnt plop you down next to the edge - of course not! It sends you all the way back to that random point you were at 20 minutes ago ... cue rage quit.
Decided to play again with the thought processs ‘it must just be me doing something wrong’? Go roll through that tiny puddle and prepare to be sent far, far away to a point where you can bounce yourself out of a friggin lake ... sense it maketh not - cue multiple rage quits.
So all in all? It looks great - It plays okay - It will be the biggest headache of your life ...the choice is yours.
