Chosen by the Valkyries

A figure loomed over him, blocking out the midday sun. Rollo could hardly keep his eyes open as he squinted up at the ethereal woman standing over him, the pain of his wound too severe to ignore. He noticed that her long, medium brown hair was intricately braided, like that of a shield maiden ready for battle. And as she crouched down beside him, her touch over his wounds was more delicate than any breeze which had ever swept across his skin. She whispered softly to him, low and comforting. Though he couldn’t hear what she said through the pain that held him so tightly in its grip. He knew this woman must be one of Odin’s famed Valkyries. He had been chosen. It was his time to be escorted to Valhalla, and he would proudly join those Vikings who had already been taken to Odin’s Great Hall.

Valkyra surveyed what remained of the battlefield, the air now filled with the sounds of dying men and feasting ravens. Any Viking who still stirred with life would receive her treatment. Meanwhile, any Baltic Tribesmen who lay dying would soon meet their own Gods. They were not her responsibility to care for, nor would the Valkyrie Eir allow her to treat them. Dismayed as she found only dead men upon the ground, she refused to give up. She felt it somewhere deep in her chest; someone out here on this blood-soaked patch of land needed her help. As she crested the hill which had served as the center of this clash between men, she saw movement. Her heart beat quickened as she hurried down the hillside to reach the man. Her footsteps slowed, keeping one hand upon her satchel of healing instruments and herbs. Tossing her hair back behind her shoulders, she knelt down beside him and ran a hand along the deep gash across his chest. Though bloodied and beaten, she instantly recognized him. How peculiar that of all of Earl Haraldson’s warriors, she would find Rollo the Bear fallen on a battlefield, awaiting her healing touch.
