#rom coms suck

So I'm a horror fan who generally tries to stay away from Rom Coms, especially ones from the 90s, and when people hear this, they normally tease me about it and ask if I just hate to laugh and I wanna explain that while the humour is an issue within the genre, a bigger and more more insidious problem is the rampant misogyny within it and the normalising of women being treated as a prize that can easily be won by men for doing the bare minimum and that a lot of problems between the sexes in modern society stems from the depictions of romance portrayed in these films shown to us at an early age.

But that would ruin the party so...

So I was thinking about why rom coms are so bad at modeling relationships for young girls, and I know this has been said before, but it’s because they typically romanticize a small hero-complex in women. Often, the plot of rom coms is based on the shitty guy who, slowly, and because of the love interest, changes throughout the movie to become the ideal man and eventually realizes how wrong he was blah blah blah. But all this does is teach young girls that they should stay in shitty relationships with shitty guys because “they can change them” and too often this is bull shit. anyways, this was just a ps: don’t date shitty guys: you probably can’t and won’t change them.
