A raindrop splattered across Garnette’s forehead startling her and interrupting the conversation. Little drops of water followed and Caleb hurriedly popped open his umbrella, taking the opportunity to press into her side. The other park goers followed suit or scurried for cover.
“Here darling.” He took a handkerchief from his breast pocket and dabbed the water from her face. Garnette’s lashes fluttered, the touch was so light but she could feel the warmth from his skin.
“Thank you.” Garnette breathed.
A ringtone split the air between them.
Garnette startled and scrambled for her phone.
“I’m so sorry, I-I only have it on for important calls.” She tried to explain.
“Don’t apologize, take your time.” Caleb assured her, giving her a little space without moving the umbrella. She apologetically nodded and lifted her phone to her ear.
“Hello, this is Garn-” The young woman was cut off by the voice on the other side of the line. Caleb couldn’t make out the words but he could hear the forceful, quick way they were speaking. Garnette’s eyes grew distant and wild, her breath shallowing.
“Okay, okay…” She mumbled in response. “I’ll be there as soon as possible.”
A moment later Gernette hung up and turned to Caleb; she looked queasy. Tears pricked the corners of her dark brown eyes.
“Caleb I’m sorry but I have to go, I hope we can try this some other time.” It was a practiced line, rehearsed and repeated. She turned before he could respond, her shoes suddenly thunderous on the pavement in Caleb’s ears.
He stumbled over his cane trying to follow her and just barely caught her sleeve with his fingertips. Garnette turned, her body still posed to bolt but she didn’t tug herself free of him.
“Where do you need to go, I’ll drive you.” He offered. The tears in Garnette’s eyes finally spilled over, the heat burning her cheeks.
“I couldn’t ask you to, I’ve already ruined the date.” She replied and Caleb’s heart broke. He slipped his fingers from her sleeve to her hand.
“You’ve ruined nothing dear, let me help.” He carefully pulled her trembling form back to him. She sniffled and he offered her his handkerchief to wipe her tears.
“She was taken to the Saint Judy’s hospital on the westside.” Garnette’s voice was small; frail as she allowed him to help.
Do I need another wip? No. Am I gonna make one? Absolutely.
Garnette was dealt a rough hand; she works herself to the bone to make ends meet while being her grandmother’s caretaker. She promises everyone she’s handling it, she promises everyone she’s fine.
Our Love Interests~
Caleb Becker is eccentric and charming, a delight to everyone he meets. Of course his father isn’t everyone and their family ties are hanging on by a thread.
Alexander Otten is our resident bad boy. Raucous and free-spirited, he’s been on his own for a long time. Adjusting to love is harder then you’d think.
Léandre Bellerose is a gentle man with a fragile heart and quiet hobbies. He is particular and precise but occasionally making a mess is necessary.
The kitchen was full. Full of smells, sounds, voices and love.
Garnette sat at the kitchen island with Caleb while Alexander and Léandre puttered around on the other side. She wasn’t sure what they were making but the aroma filling the air was mouthwatering.
“Are you sure you don’t need any help?” Alexander huffed at the question.
“We can handle this, babe, but here,” He dipped his spoon into the red sauce he was stirring, carefully lifting it and holding it out across the counter. “Try this for me.”
Garnette blew on it softly before allowing it to tip past her lips. It was savoury and rich, the spices prickled at her tongue, sitting on the edge of spiciness. The pleasurable hum that left her was involuntary.
“I want to try some.” Caleb piped up.
“Nah I don’t need your opinion.” Alexander dipped the spoon back into the pot.
“Why?” The blond squawked indignantly.
“You’re the only one here who can’t cook, what could you have to say?”
“I still have a palette!” Caleb objected.
Garnette slipped from her seat, leaving her boys to bicker. The rhythmic chopping of Léandre’s knife was soothing, his skilled hands cutting almost perfectly equal pieces. She watched him for a few moments before looking up at him.
“Can I help you?” A small smile pulled at the corner of his lips.
“No, two hands are enough.” Even in this moment his voice radiated kindness. Garnette nodded and returned her gaze to his hands. They were delicate, she knew the palms, paler than the rest of his hand, were soft and she so badly wanted to hold them.
Léandre leaned into her side. In the background Alexander and Caleb continued to chatter away over the sizzling of food.
Garnette leaned her head against his arm and closed her eyes, deeply at peace.
Garnette sat at the dining room table, a blanket wrapped around her shoulders. Bills and notebooks were splayed out in front of her. Her brow was furrowed as she counted the fresh envelopes for the seventh time.
Three bills hadn’t been delivered.
Anxiety twisted her throat, knotting up her chest. She wasn’t sure what she’d be able to cut to make do if she got charged with a late fee. Before panic could overcome her she took a deep breath, smothering the feeling. She’d call, in this day and age it shouldn’t be hard to transfer the money.
Every ring shuddered her nerves.
“Hello, St. Judy’s Hospital, how can I help you today?” A peppy voice came through the line.
“Hi, I’m calling on behalf of Delia Herrero, we didn’t receive any bills for her last three surgeries this month and i was wondering if there was another way to pay.” The anxiety she had felt quelled some as Garnette spoke. The anticipation of the call was always worse then the call itself.
“Of course, let me just pull up the info…” The receptionist asked for her grandmother’s information and Garnette provided. The familiar tap of a keyboard soothed Garnette until the other woman stopped with a thoughtful hum.
“I’m going to put you on hold for a moment.”
“Oh, o-okay.” A moment later there was click and soft music played over the speaker.
Garnette fidgeted while she waited, rearranging the papers in front of her. Her slipper tumbled off her bouncing toes.
The speaker crackled to life.
“I’m so sorry for that and another sorry since someone failed to call and tell you these debts have been paid.” The receptionist apologized.
“Paid, are you sure?” Garnette’s voice pitched when she spoke. She only had her grandmother and none of their few friends had that kind of money. She stalled the bauble of hope forming in her chest.
“Yes, the foundation ‘Dining with Denisa’ donated the money, they covered quite a few debts!”
A weight lifted from Garnette’s heart. The notebooks in front of her filled with scribbled numbers were suddenly useless in the best possible way. Tears fell from her plump cheeks.
“Are you okay ma’am?” The voice startled Garnette back to the present.
