Tinsel & Tine #MiniMovieReview ROMA writer/director /co-editor cinematographer Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity) black-and-white (subtitled) atmospheric, semi-autobiographical meditation on his childhood; particularly seen through his remembrances of the family’s live-in housekeeper/nanny Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio) while growing up in the upper-middle-class Mexico City neighborhood of Roma in the early ’70s. The opening scene is difficult to make out, you see water, but rushing over what and from where? We soon see an indigenous or mestizo Mexican young woman is washing a stone driveway which had been full of dog crap - this is Cleo, she’s stoic, dignified, loving and loyal, she brings these elements to every aspect of her life from gently waking her charges in the morning (4 rambunctious children ranging in ages about 6-12), to forever cleaning up after their family pet, to being dumped by a guy who seduces and runs, to the complicated relationship she has with the mistress of the house, the children’s mother Sofia (Marina de Tavira), to witnessing an execution style murder in a department store in the midst of Mexico City’s Corpus Christi massacre of 1971. Cleo is simply unflappable and without malice of any kind, which is why you can understand Cuarón remembering her with fondness; but is she an interesting heroine? Surprisingly yes! It’s refreshingly honest to see life through the eyes of someone who in normal everyday life, is typically overlooked. The actress, Yalitza Aparicio is actually a pre-school teacher in her debut role. The film is also full of small, personal moments added in from the filmmaker’s sense memory, a memory made vivid by the backdrop of his family in upheaval over their physician father’s mid-life crisis and subsequent moving out, without it seems, a second thought to his wife or children’s well-being.
