Crazy good times; riding through the streets of Rome, eating insane food and visiting ancient sites. #lifeisgood #lavitaebella #colosseum #romanadventures #lafamiglia (at Colosseo, Roma, Italia)
In which I take on the heart of the Catholic Church and also get kicked out of the Sistine Chapel lol
Sunday 6/30
So today I woke up late (as usual) and hustled off to meet Katarina at the Metro stop for our free Sunday at the Vatican adventure! There were SO many tourists milling about trying to take advantage of this free day, there was hardly room to walk on the sidewalk! We peeked briefly into St. Peter's Square, but it was SO relentlessly hot that we decided to spend the day in the Vatican Museums instead. Because we ended up getting to the Vatican around 10:45 am and the free day closed at 12 pm, we ended up waiting in a line more than half a mile long for close to an hour before finally getting in.

The courtyard, rife with tourists (like myself sadly)
Basically only thing I have to say from today is that the recorded (and the thought of all the unrecorded) wealth of the Catholic Church blows my fucking mind. All of the papal chambers and apartments are just so casually (maybe not so casually) decorated with some of the finest art in the world (with not all of it even on display) and just the idea that all of that art has been around for centuries is unbelievable. all great art aside, even the building itself is made of fine marble and granite and all kinds of precious stone. the presence of all these additions definitely cools down a place that undoubtedly gets crazy hot in summer, which is not helped by the infinite masses of tourists. I think I will have to come back to the museums and for St. Peter's Basilica another day, because there were way too many people today. Definitely too many people to really enjoy the art, what with all of the accidental foot-stepping, and space-crowding, and shoving, and general incidents that arise when you shove way too many curious people into a limited space. That being said, I am so happy I got to see all of these great things. I SAW LAÖCOON AND HIS SONS!!! That was a dream. I got a little trigger happy with my camera, so I do apologize for the mass of pictures. I am also getting social media confusion--and this whole blog and maybe Facebook updating situation is hard to keep track of--I just want to put my memories somewhere, and be done with it.
Me (again) you'll be tired of seein' my face soon enough

Afterwards Katarina and I tried to walk a little farther from the heart of the Vatican to find a non-touristy place to eat lunch, and were unsuccessful. We ended up at a café where the waiters would respond to our Italian questions in English, charged tip, and rushed us out of our table. I had a pizza con salame because I didn't trust them to actually make good anything else. Pizza was okay. We ended up ignoring the cafe's hurrying and had a long talk over lunch. I'm really happy to have found a friend like her in Rome!!
We then took a long walk to Piazza del Popolo, ascertained there wasn't much to see, and spent the rest of the afternoon shopping at Via del Corso. I (guiltily) bought a sweet black dress! I'm going to have to take it in a little because it's a leeeeeeetle big, but nonetheless I am quite happy with my Roman purchase. And that's that. School tomorrow! It's my 3rd week already, I can't believe it!!! Ciao! xx.
