Letter to Ms. Roman

When I look at the way my life is now, it makes me feel depressed and discontented because I feel like I'm missing out on something. Again I find myself in that confining limbo between being alive and not really living at all. I've tried to find ways to make me feel like I have a purpose again -- but the combination of failing what I set out to do when I moved away from home and now being left with much less than I had before gets to me. But I think what I really miss is the friendships. I barely have a connection anymore to nearly all the people whom I used to call my friends, and it is that fact that makes me appreciate ours even more -- along with everyone else at Dal. I miss the nights when we had nothing better to do than dance around with cue sticks to Anne Hathaway singing I Dreamed a Dream. I miss the dinners, the late night food runs, the drunken nights. I miss having people like you around me. I look back fondly on our last days together -- walking home from an exam and to our surprise being handed free passes to see The Place Beyond the Pines; the talk we had during the walk and at Second Cup after the movie. Something about that day was so beautiful. And I just wish I didn't feel like all that was behind me.

Letter to Ms. Roman

I've let myself go in every aspect. Strangely enough, I feel like this is exactly what I need to do right now. After that night at the club I went to the hospital and told them I was suicidal so I spent the night there. I wanted help. My sister may be put into another foster home, and at least I knew she was getting by in the one she's currently in. I hate going to visit her even though I know she misses me deeply, because it makes me profoundly sad. I'm afraid that she's already feeling the same sadness, and she's not even seven years old yet. So I ask her if she's sad and my fears are proven right, and all I can do is tell her that the situation won't last forever and she must be mostly happy. My dad's still crazy, and I think I might have to move out on my own to keep my piece of mind. I think I have to go back to Halifax sooner than I thought and get my own place. Or maybe I won't go back at all and just start a new life in LA, or New York. And I don't know what I'll do for money since I can't get a fucking job but I have a bit in my account. I'm not trying hard enough to get one but I'm devoid of life and I'm struggling to find it. I don't know what I want anymore. And I'm feeling what you were feeling, maybe what you still are feeling; purposeless, as if I left a crucial fragment of me and it won't be able to make me whole again for a very long time. I'm just lost. So that's why I have to let myself go. You told me I was resilient, so I try to live up to that. You give me strength because I think of you when I'm making decisions about my life, and I want you to be proud of what I do. I think of your last words to me in person - "find yourself" - and for some reason I want to do that for both of us. I want you to see it when it happens.
