One day we were birds
This film is based on a Romani story
There is an old legend that tells that the Roma were birds. One day as they were flying above earth , they saw a golden palace shinning with the sun so they flew down to see it better. The palace was inhabited by turkeys, chickens and ducks that, were amazed by the beauty of the Roma/birds, they gifted them all kinds of jewels and treats, begging them to not leave. Soon all the birds were covered with golden chains from head to toe. Only one bird resisted the temptation of all those riches, asking the others to start their fly again. But, nobody heard him. Then , with a heavy heart, he rose in the sky and threw himself to the rocks. Only in that moment the roma/birds woke up from their lethargy and started to flap their wings. But the gold was heavy and they couldn’t rise from the ground. The turkeys, chickens and ducks sang in victory. They would keep forever such beautiful birds locked in golden cages. Suddenly, a tiny red feather slipped inside the palace and landed to the birds feet. The gold fell from their bodies, but their wings no longer obey them and they couldn’t take fly. The tiny red feather , softly carried by the wind , got out of the palace and started to wonder through the dusty roads. The Roma followed and started to lose their feathers one by one, transforming into humans. With body of a man but th soul of a bird, they forever forgot how to fly.
Sooo after like half a year of not taking ruska Roma dance with my teacher I finally made myself time to take her online class again
Yana Tsehotskaya an Ukrainian dancer performing Kawleeya , the backbends and costume is a little diferent than traditional Kawleeya but her performance is very good
This is a performance of Assala Ibrahim she is an Iraqi dancer known for trying to preserve iraqi traditional dances as there are not many iraqis that perform now and also she teaches this romani iraqi dance known as Kawleeya , the situation of the Roma in Iraq right now is very sad as they are forced to live in poverty and are forbidden to perform. The other dancers are famous bellydancers : Sadie (USA) and Martha Korzun (Ukraine)
This video is a part of Jeremy Marre’s documental , the Romani trail , it explains how the Romani from India which are presumed to have been the first ones , migrated and end up in Egypt , the word gypsy probably comes from the word “ Egyptian” , the video also shows Romani Egyptians knows as ghawazees , the Mazin sisters were famous performers of Romani Egyptian dance and of preserve the tradition , nowadays there is only one sister left
Today I watched the Hunchback of Notredame again and remembered how I wanted to learn to dance like Esmeralda only to find out years later that scene was all performance and not actually any style of Roma dance
I love having a roommate cuz that means I can try out all wild fanfiction ideas on her and see if they actually make sense.
Like chapter 9 has a dance scene based on an original dance that fuses Lebanese dabke, traditional Romani dances from Manouche Sinti of France, and slight inspiration women’s fancy shawl dance (an Indigenous dance from Turtle Island/ colonial North America).
Anyways I’ve been making her dance with me in the kitchen and it’s acc sooo helpful. This is why I can’t live alone lol.
