Yana Tsehotskaya an Ukrainian dancer performing Kawleeya , the backbends and costume is a little diferent than traditional Kawleeya but her performance is very good

This is a performance of Assala Ibrahim she is an Iraqi dancer known for trying to preserve iraqi traditional dances as there are not many iraqis that perform now and also she teaches this romani iraqi dance known as Kawleeya , the situation of the Roma in Iraq right now is very sad as they are forced to live in poverty and are forbidden to perform. The other dancers are famous bellydancers : Sadie (USA) and Martha Korzun (Ukraine)

This site has a TON of great info on kawleeya, w/lots of great video too. ♥  (Unfortunately they do throw the “g” word around a good bit, but thankfully, they also mention at the top of the page about how distasteful that term is, in addition to offering alternatives to it. :))  I’m eager to learn more, but as a starter, this was exactly what I was looking for. :)  Smart, informed, respectful, and concise. ♥

One thing though; it should be noted that this dance has a -huge- connection to prostitution in the Middle East, so please, both learn- and teach- w/both care & respect.  The last thing I’m sure anyone would want is to give the wrong impression, or dishonor others. ♥ ♥ ♥

Holy CRAP!!  It may kill me to try, and my hair may all be cut off, but I WANNA LEARN THIS DANCE!!  (Along with, of course, all of its spiritual and cultural meanings, purposes, practices and beliefs.  Dances are MORE than just moves! ^_^ ♥ ♥)  SO wonderful!! XD
