Mother of the Woods
*
This drawing is about Muma Pădurii (it would translate to 'Mother of the Woods' in EN), the mother of mothers, a key magical figure in Romanian folklore.
She is the mother of the trees, who nurses each one of them, and protects them and other woodland creatures from humans, wailing, groaning and moaning horribly when her children are hurt.
She can appear as a crone, with wild hair reaching her feet, that curses men and women and drives them mad, eats children lost in the woods, or as a young and beautiful woman luring men to their deaths. But she is also cast as a positive figure: guiding lost children back home and offer protection to good people entering her domain. When her children anger her she curses them to be felled by lightning or cut down by humans.
*
I drew her in her young form, somewhat surveying her domain, dressed in a dress resembling our traditional "ie". She has tree branches for horns, leaves grow in her color-changing hair, and mushrooms and moss grow on her feet.
Since the Copic Ciao color selection isn't complete and the Copic Sketch markers are rather pricy, I took advantage of the old Copic Refills going on sale and used the ink like you would watercolor, with a palette and brush 🎨🖌️ It was really fun, but also really frustrating because the alcohol cleaner and the ink itself dried up super fast.
That being said, I hope you still enjoy this drawing.
