Isamu Noguchi and Buckminster Fuller’s bromance began in 1929 when they met at Romany Marie’s, a bohemian cafe in Greenwich Village popular amongst the intelligentsia. Constantin Brancusi had recommended Romany Marie’s to Noguchi while he was in Paris working with the Romanian sculptor on a Guggenheim Fellowship. (Bruncusi liked to visit the cafe with Matisse, as one does.) Meanwhile, Fuller was a regular at Marie’s, having designed the interior with aluminium paint and furniture in exchange for meals.
