It’s really stupid, but sometimes when I watch my husband interacting with our daughter… I can’t help but feel a little stab of envy. Growing up, I never had a father who worshiped and adored me the way Dimitri does Anya. There’s a closeness between the two of them that I’ll never have with Abe—and that’s something I’ll always regret. I’ll never know what it’s like to be carried on my father’s shoulders or to have him tuck me in at night, holding my hand and watching over me as I drift off to sleep. All those childhood moments are lost—we can’t reclaim them.
Anya will never cry herself to sleep, wondering if her daddy cares or if he even remembers her name the way I did when I was a kid. I’m thankful for that… thankful that she has a man like Dimitri to teach her and help her grow up into an amazing woman—one who won’t be haunted by abandonment issues or painful memories the way I am.
