huh. that looks like a PROJECT! it sounds as if you're set on tile- but In case your aren't aware of the option: I had my surround re-done with counter-top laminate. They cut it to size out of a single piece. NO seams. They steam bend in into shape. It cleans SO easy! There are many many choices of surface patterns and colours. I LOVE it.

Oooh, what an intriguing option! I mean I’m not dead-set on tile, it just seems like the nicest and best value-add, but I’ll look into that. (On the other hand it doesn’t sound like a self-installation deal, while I’m hoping to be able to retile myself.)

Ah, adventures in tiling. The people who owned this house before us tiled *around* the toilets. Which is... not the way you do that. At all. Our replacement toilet is politely perched on the ring of the old toilet until we decide to retile...

Yikes. It seems people are very afraid of cutting tile. Admittedly I was like “Can I cut tile myself?” but tile cutters are cheaper than I imagined, so I’m gonna go with “yes I can”.

You can also have the tub reglazed if you want to change the color on that.

I probably will eventually, but honestly I don’t mind the tub, it seems like it’s in pretty good condition.

We had tiles about that colour in our first place. So unless design trends were different in the US (quite possible) they might be from the late 60's. (Also as a side note, the tiling was shoddy and a wall of them fell on me while I was showering. Ouch!)

Well, the building was rehabbed over from industrial to residential about fifteen years ago, but I would be willing to bet when the rehab was happening the interior guys were like “Hey....we know where to get some cheap tile....”

Re: the tile around the hardware- My mom was a realtor who once sold a house where the owner painted the living room just around the furniture, not behind it. Buyers were not impressed.

I know that probably this was like “painted around bookshelves” but I’m just picturing someone carefully edging around a sofa pushed up against a wall and like...god that seems like MORE work....

If it's a condo with central air, the system is probably on the roof of the building. Have your guy look at that and tell you how old it is. They are a bear to replace (we had to hire some guys with a crane). If not, carry on, nothing to see here.

I’m not entirely sure we’ll have access to the roof, most buildings in downtown Chicago don’t give access unless there’s like, a party deck up there. Fortunately I have some very meticulous friends who also live in the building and they did their due diligence, so I feel relatively confident in the actual building’s integrity and finances.

UGH, the radiator under window thing. Currently battling that in my new apartment. It's 80 degrees in my room, and MUCH colder in all the common areas.

Yeah, I don’t know if radiators are more fuel efficient than central but they certainly aren’t as good at actually heating a room. 

FWIW, I found that a very low-powered fan, situated in front of the radiator and blowing outward (ie, with its back to the radiator), helped a bit -- the fan sucks in the heat and blows it out into the room. It’s not pleasant to be in front of, but it helps at least circulate it a bit when you’re not in the room.

Wait what else do people use to heat their homes if not radiators??

It’s called “central” or “forced” heating -- there’s ductwork throughout the home which blows hot (or cold) air into the room through vents in the walls, ceilings, or floors. I grew up with central heating so I had never encountered a radiator until I lived in Boston one summer in college, and since it was summer I didn’t encounter a functioning radiator until I moved to Chicago after grad school (I attended grad school in a Hot Place). Central/forced HVAC tends to be more effective at heating or cooling the entire room, and much easier to control (you use a thermostat as opposed to turning the valve on a radiator to release more/less heat). 

Older buildings, especially in the big midwestern and east coast cities, tend to rely on radiator heating and window-unit (or unit-in-wall) air conditioning because installing ductwork would be either too expensive or impossible given the configuration of the existing building. I knew I had clawed my way firmly into the middle class when I could afford to rent an apartment in Chicago that had central heat and air. :D

These are both awesome! I totally want to try Spriss Juice now. Though I think I’m going to stick with the burnt rice tea -- Spriss looks like something you go out for, and it’s too early in the day for boozin’ :D Thank you though, I am filing these away for future possible use!

i mean, almost nothing about Wakanda's cultural sourcing makes much *geographic* sense, especially considering their political history. pan-Africanism and national isolationism *ought* to be fairly mutually exclusive. symbolism over logic sounds correct when expanding things, too.

I assumed the pan-Africanism came from Wakanda occasionally inviting outsiders from other African nations/cultures in, if for no other reason than to keep the gene pool stable, given its relative size. And one assumes that their War Dogs occasionally bring back partners and children from the outside world. So I guess it was my assumption that if the non-green-tea genmaicha had made it to the mainland, it would probably have made it to Wakanda sooner or later.

Ehh, it’s just supertasting. I get the same sensation from cinnamon, cheaper kinds of whole-wheat bread, and brown rice. It’s not an allergic burn (which I am semi-familiar with) but more like when you eat a pepper and get a burning feeling.

... This is intentional. It has to be. It has to be. There is no other possible explanation for this existence. So I just have to ask myself, is everyone aware? Worst wedding night ever. The obliviators sitting outside waiting to find out if they're needed, because marriage means the statute is up, right? Do you stay married or divorce in the morning. Ugh. Consent issues.

Damn right, consent issues. And what’s worse, I’m pretty sure it’s hinted there wouldn’t be trained obliviators - too much a waste of public funding. No, it’d have to be the witch or wizard themselves who perform the obliviating or memory charms and disillusionment on THEIR OWN PARTNER.

This is brought up (in a minor, low-key way) by Seamus Finnigan, who states-

"I'm half and half. Me dad's a Muggle; Mam's a witch. Bit of a nasty shock for him when he found out."

So, clearly, what appears to have happened is that they married, and he was unaware until she revealed things to him. We do not know how stable their relationship was, after that, either - the man isn’t mentioned afterwards as far as I can tell. As far as I know, they may have broken up, or (more likely, given the potential that he might have been obliviated otherwise) they stayed together ‘for the sake of the kids’, as the saying goes.

And also as far as I’ve been able to read into the series, marriage doesn’t necessarily have to mean the statute is up... just that it’s harder to keep it a secret if you want to do that.
