I found this LOTR newsletter when it was almost over: will you be running it again at any time in the future?

Hi! I do intend to organise it again, which means it would start in September. However, we are still over two months away from the end of the newsletter! So if you want to experience the book in real time I'd wait if I were you, but if you just want to read it chronologically and see which events happen simultaneously and read at your own pace, you can totally still sign up now (I try to send past entries to new subscribers around weekends). It's up to you :)

It used to be a Very Unimpressed Face back when she was a kitten, but as she grew the black eyebrow lines above her eyes began to tilt up slightly, so now she looks faintly concerned. Unless she’s blinking in which case she still looks deeply judgemental. :D

On the topic of your latin, Sam, I always grin at your header, because "Anything worth building is worth overbuilding" was my grandpa's personal motto, and he's the one who got me started with carpentry stuff in the first place (including my unnecessary oversized birdhouse).

The best part of Si Creabis, Fit Redunda is that it’s imperative -- it’s technically “If you do it, overdo it”. But because Latin is so efficient, you don’t really need “Fit”. Redunda covers the entire concept of “Overdo it”. Fit is just.....overdoing it. :D

I didn’t really notice until you guys pointed it out and I went back to look at them on a proper screen (rather than my phone) but heck yes, apparently I did get a Better Camera Than Previous :D

Arrrrgh, my sympathies - that was pretty much my entire winter (and half of Melbourne's, judging by the comments on r/melbourne. .Do you have a crockpot? I have a casserole recipe that I've tweaked for maximum garlic and ginger and it's wonderful for colds. Message me if you want it. :)

It's so frustrating because she addresses subjects I'm *very* interested in but I. Cannot. Stand. Her. to the point I can't even analyse the content. (Someone on a Brit friend's FB made the observation she's basically Anne in the Famous Five. I may have made a reply consisting of OH GOD YES THANK YOU THAT'S IT EXACTLY.)

Right? Like in very small doses she seems to be great fun but then it’s like...okay, where is the meaty weight to this information, beneath the sticky-sweet gloss? And it’s just??? ABSENT???? She’s promised an epic dinner-party of haute cuisine and is serving up a bag of M&Ms somebody’s sat on.

Hey, it feels like a cop-out to just give one big shout out, but I wanted to say thanks to everyone who wished me a happy birthday! IT WAS TERRIBLE! :D 

We had a staff meeting in terrible heat and humidity, and then I went home and slept off a headache. But I did get lots of cuddles from the kittens, and anyway I’m properly celebrating my birthday next week with the family, so it’s not a huge deal. 

But I did appreciate all the birthday wishes!

Polk looks so shiny

She is! They both have super shiny soft fur. Which is great except now it’s really dry in my place and they’re giving me and each other shocks all the time.

You know, I googled, and it looks like you can get them to pretty convincingly gelatin up.

Indeed I am! I wouldn’t miss it, and Mum’s coming too. She’s a bit skeptical of the marriage but I’m sure once she meets R’s wife she’ll warm up to the idea.

Speaking of, @talondark and @gryphonrhi, thank you for your lovely offers to hang out/tour around while I’m in Memphis, but I’ll be taken up pretty much full time with chaperoning mum and the wedding, and won’t be in the actual city for very long (the wedding is outside of it). But I really appreciate the thought!

Well, not by blood. But we call each other brothers by another mother, and he calls my mum Mama (her first name). So I think of him as my brother and her as my sister-in-law.

It’s one of the small towns in northern Indiana, just near the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. (I don’t want to give too many details because it’s R’s hometown.)

huh. that looks like a PROJECT! it sounds as if you're set on tile- but In case your aren't aware of the option: I had my surround re-done with counter-top laminate. They cut it to size out of a single piece. NO seams. They steam bend in into shape. It cleans SO easy! There are many many choices of surface patterns and colours. I LOVE it.

Oooh, what an intriguing option! I mean I’m not dead-set on tile, it just seems like the nicest and best value-add, but I’ll look into that. (On the other hand it doesn’t sound like a self-installation deal, while I’m hoping to be able to retile myself.)

Ah, adventures in tiling. The people who owned this house before us tiled *around* the toilets. Which is... not the way you do that. At all. Our replacement toilet is politely perched on the ring of the old toilet until we decide to retile...

Yikes. It seems people are very afraid of cutting tile. Admittedly I was like “Can I cut tile myself?” but tile cutters are cheaper than I imagined, so I’m gonna go with “yes I can”.

You can also have the tub reglazed if you want to change the color on that.

I probably will eventually, but honestly I don’t mind the tub, it seems like it’s in pretty good condition.

We had tiles about that colour in our first place. So unless design trends were different in the US (quite possible) they might be from the late 60's. (Also as a side note, the tiling was shoddy and a wall of them fell on me while I was showering. Ouch!)

Well, the building was rehabbed over from industrial to residential about fifteen years ago, but I would be willing to bet when the rehab was happening the interior guys were like “Hey....we know where to get some cheap tile....”

Re: the tile around the hardware- My mom was a realtor who once sold a house where the owner painted the living room just around the furniture, not behind it. Buyers were not impressed.

I know that probably this was like “painted around bookshelves” but I’m just picturing someone carefully edging around a sofa pushed up against a wall and like...god that seems like MORE work....

They used a belt in Regency House Party but I'm not sure how historically accurate that was!

That show was the most ridiculous fake-matchmaking kind of social experiment clusterfuck masquerading as ‘living history’ while most everyone just ran around acting as if they were on TOWIE. Not that I doubt many Regency houseparties were equally debauched from time to time, but those modern contestants all whined so much I kept wondering if they’d been somehow tricked into their involvement with the show. Like, did they not know they were going to be halfheartedly prodded towards a much stricter code of etiquette and class stratification than they were used to? (Not that there were really any consequences for bad behaviour or poor efforts.)

Anyway, given that the whole thing devolved into shags and giggles, I doubt the network was going to make any of the ladies free bleed all over their pretty dresses in the name of historical accuracy when they could just rig up a girdle and call it a day before sending them back downstairs to make louche jokes and get drunk on port while failing to grasp the rules of whist.
