Hi! please help how did you draw the Ronan's scale tattoo?

i started with a base and then decided i didn’t like that and winged the rest of it. i prefer to draw his tattoo unruly because hennessy probably had to work on it quick without much of a base. i then duplicate the tattoo layer, reduce opacity and blur the duplicated layer to show how the ink has spread under the skin.
