deux — THEIR STORY
Trigger Warnings: fire, parental death
Born and raised in Quebec, Ronav wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. He was the second child to his parents, three years younger than his older brother Dev. There was nothing unusual about his upbringing-- perhaps his parents were a bit stricter than others, but they only wanted their boys to do well and succeed. Ronav achieved passing marks in school; he wasn’t valedictorian but he wasn’t in the bottom half of his class. He was average. As far as he was concerned, nothing significant ever happened to average people.
Ronav had one goal after graduation, and that was to become a teacher. Teachers had the summers off and work hours that would allow him to continue to go out in the evenings. He wasn’t necessarily a partier, but if he’d try anything once. However, this subpar dream was shattered one fateful night. Ronav and Dev were at their local bar, a place that they frequented many times in their life (thanks to fake ID’s). Lights flashed by from the street, but the brothers didn’t think anything of it. Ambulances and other services were always driving up and down roads-- it just never was to their house.
Once they arrived home, everything came crashing down. Literally. An electrical fire had taken down their childhood home, and with it, their parents. In a blink of an eye, they had to fend for themselves. Dev had plenty of luck couch surfing with his friends, working numerous jobs through college and finding a decent apartment with the insurance money. Ronav struggled with the aftermath. He was no longer average, no longer just coasting through life. He could no longer sleep a full night, tossing and turning as nightmares played through his mind. In the daytime, he struggled through his college classes, lost a student-teaching job due to becoming romantically involved with another staff member and eventually dropped out; looking for a fresh start.
Where else could he have a fresh start but somewhere across the world? After practically pleading with his aunt and uncle, they came to an agreement that he could have a room as long as he had a job. Instead of graduating and becoming the teacher he thought he was destined to be, Ronav is making lattes, playing his mandolin throughout the night, and struggling to maintain a relationship with his brother that doesn’t send him down a path of negative thinking.
