hey! i was looking in the university of arkansas tag and saw that you go there, and i think i'll end up there next year because it would be cheap and its close to home, anyways is it a very southern/conservative/preppy school? its just im super liberal and not very preppy and dont like to go to very many parties and im worried i wouldnt fit in!
I’m of the opinion that if you’re willing to look for people to spend time with, there is someone who is willing to be your friend.
Personally, I’m conservative. But I haven’t really delved much into politics here, a) because political discussions piss me off and b) because I spend the vast majority of my time in my interior design classes, so I haven’t taken many classes that even kind of veer into political topics.
There is a young democrats club on campus, and I know they did a lot of stuff during the election last year, such as watch parties and such. But I have no clue how well they were attended, because I didn’t go to any of their events.
A lot of the professors here lean pretty liberal, I think. My anthropology professors definitely did. And yeah, I think most people here are pretty conservative, but there were definitely kids who were more liberal in both of my anthropology classes, and I never heard anyone rag on them. If anything, having differing opinions made discussions better (because nothing kills a debate like everyone agreeing). I don’t know if my experiences are typical, since I’m in the honors college (classes are smaller and more discussion based), but obviously I can only speak to what I’ve seen.
I think our school is the perfect amount of Southern. I’m from St. Louis, so it’s a change of pace. But I love that guys hold open doors, I love that cars actually stop for pedestrians, and I love the sense of tradition. But most people don’t have a southern accent, and people still call soda soda (not “coke”).
Preppy? I don’t know, I guess. It depends on what you mean by preppy. I’ve seen plenty of unique fashion around here. Greek life is kind of a big deal, but I’m not in a sorority; that’s never been a problem, since I don’t party. There are plenty of things to do around here that don’t involve alcohol, and how much fun you’ll have just depends on how willing you are to go find those things.
I wouldn’t worry too much about not fitting in. You’ll fit in just fine. Because despite the wide variety of faiths, nationalities, and political beliefs on campus, all that really matters is that you’re really excited about the Razorbacks.
I love it here, and I hope you do, too. If you end up coming to the “You of A,” look me up. I’m always on board for meeting new people.
