Holly Hunt - Year One

Comprised of Beatriz Monteavaro (drums) and Gavin Perry (guitar), Holly Hunt manages to create a wavelength of sonic diversity alongside unforgiving and gorgeous repetition.  Simmering just below the surface of musical texture is the psychedelic aesthetic that Monteavaro and Perry conjure.  Year One plays like a conversation between the unrelenting thud of Monteavaro's drumming prowess and Perry's brilliant guitar work - each instrument answering a question the other asks with a layer of pure auditory bliss.  There's an unpredictability with Year One that speaks volumes of the camaraderie between Monteavaro and Perry as musicians.  It's a formidable task to compliment the dissonance created by one instrument with the lush harmonies of another, yet Holly Hunt do this with an ease that permeates each track, building to a crescendo that perhaps leaves more questions than it does answers.  

Recorded by Jonathan Nũnez of Torche, the soundscape of Year One is one devoid of hesitancy and packed with the steady drone of Monteavaro and Perry communicating both with each other and the listener as one definitive consciousness.  The result here is a cavalcade of searing guitar work and crushing percussion to create a masterful wake in its path.  Year One is a breath of fresh air in an oftentimes stagnant subsection of the heavy metal realm.  Brutally muted yet lush in the undercurrent of its sound, Year One is a brilliant achievement for Holly Hunt.  The album drops on December 11th courtesy of Other Electricities and Roofless Records.  You can pre-order here, and if you're of the impatient variety, then have a listen to one of my new favorite bands:
