Lucanis Week - Day Four: Family, Enemies, Contracts
Lucanis : " <...> After an assassination, some clients don't want the body hanging around. Too many questions."
Davrin : "Here's the part where I back away slowly."
Getting rid of evidence is important. [I love Davrin and Lucanis's dynamics. Lots of fun.]
Drabble
Nothing.
No black void, not a single flicker of consciousness or sense of self.
Everything was simply gone.
Time ceased to exist and if it passed, it passed without Lucanis noting.
It might have been an eternity, an hour, a minute, or mere seconds before a sudden crash of sound, a blinding light, and intense feeling exploded all around him.
Every breath felt labored and his thoughts were slow and foggy as he fell to his hands and knees.
'What happened?'
The last thing he could recall was his death grip on the lyrium dagger, the metal ring cutting into his palm as he slipped closer to his target. Then everything went blank.
"ROOK. NEEDS. HELP!"
The familiar voice cut through the fog of memory, and blinking rapidly, Lucanis shook his head in an attempt to clear it. Spite had assessed the situation much quicker and the desperation that colored the spirit's words sent a chill down Lucanis's spine.
'Rook?!'
Rook was being dragged away by a blight tentacle and hoisted unceremoniously before Ghilan'nain. Their body dangled, defenseless and held aloft by one leather clad ankle. Lucanis felt his heart sink into the pit of his stomach, the dread quickly sharpening his focus.
"MOVE!"
Spite's command was absolute, his wings extending from the assassin's back in impatient determination.
Pushing to his feet, vision clearing, Lucanis grit his teeth and briefly relinquished control to Spite. Feet leaving the ground, purple wings carried them to a nearby crumbling column. Crouching down, dagger at the ready, his brow furrowed as he formulated a quick plan of action.
"...And we don't owe you a thing!"
Rook's voice rang out adamantly, tone cold and full of defiance. Lucanis clung to that familiar voice, a voice now colored by unwavering resolve.
Twirling the dagger, Spite's wings shot out in one powerful move and Lucanis's thigh muscles tensed. It was now or never.
Rook need them.
With a low growl rumbling through clenched teeth, Lucanis leapt towards the blighted Evanuris mage.
This time they would not miss.

(In the Fade and on Contracts)
Just a minor hiccup in the largest contract he's ever taken.
"Disguise"... more like disgust. This is just sad. Get our man out of that bullshit please? /snort
Contracts require planning.
Lucanis Week - Day 3
For the love of Treviso/A Moment's Peace
Harding : "Treviso's really beautiful! The canals... the bridges... the old spires... it's all gorgeous!"
Lucanis : "Isn't it? I've learned not to take it for granted."
Drabble:
The conversation echoed in his thoughts long after the trio had stepped through the Vi'Revas and returned to the Lighthouse. With a small wave to Harding, Lucanis ambled out of the rotunda and into the courtyard. So absorbed was he in his ruminations, the assassin missed the moment Rook prudently slipped away without a word.
"Home." Spite declared suddenly, shattering the eerie silence of the Fade as he materialized at Lucanis's side. The spirit's purple gaze tracked Rook's retreating figure with an unabashed look of anticipatory glee.
Lucanis, oblivious to the subject of Spite's words much less the undertones of ownership, simply nodded in agreement.
Si, Treviso was home. Beautiful. Haunting. A place rife with memories both good and bad, every bridge and rooftop in turn traumatizing and liberating.
Lucanis supposed that was how the idea of home always was. Comforting, familiar, yet heavy. Something a person carried with them in the roots of their being, much like a patch of ivy. The tendrils are hard to extract fully, but they were malleable to pruning.
He had a chance now, one that was orchestrated by Caterina but made a reality by Rook. A chance he would fight with dagger and fist to hold onto. This new lease on life, no matter how twisted, would require truncating the withered branches of pain to allow room for new growth. New memories and a new way to live, Spite in tow.
He would always carry the scars of his past, but he did not have to let them fester. He could figure this out, this new life, while taking time to appreciate the beauty in a cup of coffee. In Treviso.
In home.
"Want. ROOK!"
Lucanis blinked, snatched from his reverie by the shadowed figure pacing a circle around him, the spirit's gaze knowing.
"ROOK. Home."
"... Mierda."
Treviso GIFS:
And one of Lucanis because it IS his week. He agrees.
Treviso is beautiful :
Senka : "I'll tell you the tale of a charming rogue who stole the heart of a hapless hero."
I've seen a few takes where some interpret Rook's phrasing to mean that they consider themselves hapless.
Cool, cool.
Allow me to divert sharply here: Senka doesn't. Consider herself hapless, I mean.
She knows Lucanis loves to read romances. (She notes every little thing this man does. It is a habit borne of being a Crow. You can't be a good assassin without a focused mind and a meticulous attention to details.) Thus, in this moment she is weaving their love story for him via the "comfort" of her voice using verbiage she knows those books rely on.
Perhaps one day, Sen will even write their tale down in one of those fancy leather journals she came across on the desk in the Wolf's Den.
Solas won't mind. Not that she cares if he does.
Dellamorte and de Riva ... their story in her handwriting, the stark contrasts of black ink on cream parchment... something with a ridiculous title like: "Piccola Morte". [She's not a writer. She's a fucking assassin.]
But it IS something she winds up doing.
For him.
Years later...
"Piccola Morte" By Senka de Riva Dellamorte
Randy Dowager - Four and a half knives deftly sheathed out of five.
Solas finds a signed copy in the Lighthouse years later. To the Dread Wolf... He and Lavellan stay up all night reading it.
Senka understood the assignment.
Lucanis Week Day 5 -Coffee/Cooking/Wyverns
Lucanis shares something he loves with Harding.
Drabble
Swirling the coffee around in his cup, the action more reflex than conscious decision, Lucanis studied the dwarven woman next to him. Harding always seemed so chipper, a smile forever lying in wait, the jewel to complement her sunny disposition. That ready kindness was what made her... well, her.
And yet...
Lucanis recognized the people-pleasing defensiveness for what it was. Confrontation seemed hard for the dwarven woman, especially if it involved those around her. She was always quick to apologize and back down to a friend or colleague, regardless of whether she was in the wrong. So, while she was undoubtedly a skilled and deadly archer, there was a part of her that shied away from standing up for herself.
Why was this renowned scout of the Inquisition defaulting to appeasement?
"I know I don't NEED to do it. I just do," Harding insisted.
Bringing the cup of coffee to his lips and taking a sip, Lucanis's thoughts turned over various possibilities. Alas, his quiet moment of reflection was shattered when Rook's familiar tones colored the air around them. Their cadence carried a shade of absolute certainty that painted the air with their conviction.
"Yeah, but you shouldn't. Be yourself."
Rook's words settled heavily in the air, and Lucanis felt the truth of them deeply. Rook was right. Being oneself, someone unconcerned with the opinions and assumptions of others, was true freedom.
His thoughts drifted to his grandmother, the First Talon, whose influence always lingered in his mind. Lucanis was being hypocritical, and he was aware of it. Harding sought to mollify to avoid confrontation. Was he any better? His drive to appease Caterina was fueled by a desperate attempt to avoid disappointing the woman who raised him from a young age. He constantly tried to fit into a role that was carved out for him the moment Caterina decided who would be the better protégé: him or Illario.
Lucanis put so much effort into being the person he imagined she wanted—the ideal Crow, the perfect grandson, and a good cousin. But when was the last time he paused to think about what he wanted? Not what Illario was doing, or what his grandmother wished for, but what he truly hoped for himself.
Had he ever?
Looking up from the depths of his cup, his gaze met Rook's, and he felt Spite stir.
Maybe it was time he considered himself.
Even if it was only in his thoughts and dreams at the moment.

The slight shake of her head here kills me. It's like Senka is either panicking or unsure of what he's doing.
Knowing my girl Sen, it's a moment of internal panic.
Maybe this is her trying wordlessly let him know that he doesn't have to do this. That it's okay and that she's working on being okay...
Or maybe it's fear. She's out of the Fade Prison, exhausted, angry, emotionally distant for her own sanity. But that look on his face, a strangely soft intensity, his brown eyes never leaving her blue. She's walking on that edge of crumbling and if he ... then he hits his knees, looking up at her and she knows she's lost.
His softly admonishing, "Rook..." as he calls her out for hiding behind her infamous smirk and sarcastic deflection.
She tries to keep hidden behind her sarcasm, but he sees through her. Sen doesn't know when it happened, when he grew to know her so well, but he did. And she finds herself no longer across a vast chasm. She is here, in this moment with him, bared and petrified.
She holds her breath, waiting...
I love these two.
He is the only one who could ever get her to be who she truly is.
