39 Tales from the Triptych, conceived by Scott Walters directing class, overseen by Scott Walters. The same weekend I was doing Pride of Lions down the road at IWU, I was also preparing for my directing final which was going to have a presentational performance by the entire class. Scott Walters’s directing classes were different in that we took an unconventional source material and adapted it into a play. The other class did Wisconsin Death Trip, a non-fiction book of photos from the 19th century. Our class was given a Hieronymus Bosch Triptych to work form a built a narrative from there. Our story was that of an artist and explored his responsibility where change and action are concerned. Was simply painting what he saw enough, or should he have taken more direct action. I was cast in the role of the interrogator, one of the parts I contributed. I actually gave myself the line PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN because I am a shameless whore. We performed it in 116 (the band room) late at night because I had to come from my performance at Wesleyan. My favorite memory was getting a call from Stacey the morning of, the one rehearsal I could attend that week due to the Wesleyan show. I got home late the night before and forgot to set an alarm. But back then we had answering machines so we could screen calls in real time, and woken from my sleep I hear Stacey “Hi Chris! It’s Stacey. I’m sure you know that today is your one rehearsal in the space for our directing final which is tonight, which you are currently late for, and since you are in it, I thought you might care to, you know, actually show up and rehearse. So if you get this, show up and rehearse.” Luckily I lived across the tracks from the theater building and was there in five minutes. #retrospective #1994 #talesfromthetriptych #scottwalters #room116 #directingclass (at Illinois State University) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5SkYUNJvvr/?igshid=pczdn4losv79
