112 Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett adapted by Chris Hainsworth dir Kevin Theis for Lifeline Theatre. When we were picking this season, we noted a definite war theme with KA and 2C, and KA was all men, so we thought having a 3rd show that fell in with that theme, but had a strong female presence would make sense. So I proposed Monstrous Regiment. I sent the book to old friend Kevin Theis, who directed Fair Maid back in the day, he said yes, cast the show with comedic powerhouses and we were set. A mostly stand alone discworld novel (Sam Vimes and the Watch appear, but I removed them from my adaptation) MR is the story of Polly Perks, whose brother Paul has enlisted and disappeared in one of Borogravia’s endless wars, so she cuts off her hair, puts on some breeches, shoves a bar towel down them, and enlists under the name of Oliver. In addition to finding herself in the same company as a Vampire, an Igor and a Troll, she also discovers that all the young “lads” in the company, are women in disguise for various reasons. Under the battle weary cynical tutelage of the infamous Sgt. Jackrum and the deliberately optimistic leadership of Lt. Blouse, they become infamous themselves after humiliating the Crown Prince of Slobenia and pursued across the country as they attempt to storm the keep and rescue their allies. This is probably the best thing I have ever done or been associated with. The perfect team of artists working to the best of their ability came together on this one and put on a show that was a hit critically and financially. I could take up another seven posts with this show alone and only scrape the surface. So I’ll just say thank you. To the cast, crew and everyone who came. At the end of the day no matter how you squeeze or present it, a great character is a great character and Madge is the best by a mile. Wonderful one-liners, complex and layered relationships with everyone in the cast around her, a messy and real depiction of female sexuality (especially a lesbian!) that she is never punished or demeaned for, and all of this brought to life in a performance that could make a phone book fun.
