Rooster Update

Since the rooster situation has been going on for so long. I went ahead and let the new chickens out to roam over the weekend with Buddy. How chickens who have not free ranged before behave when allowed to free range is a topic for another post but anyway.

Yesterday was the first day I left Buddy and Rhett out while I was at work (someone was here to check on them). I could do this because Joanna has decided her calling in life is breaking up rooster fights. Rhett and Buddy are also far less fixated on each other. Whether this is new hens, just lack of interest, or because getting almost body slammed by a 65 pound dog is unpleasant, I don’t really know.

For whatever reason, the boys broke off to separate parts of the yard. I’ve added two new feeding stations. It looked like they did get into a little bit of a fight while I was away yesterday. Buddy had a wound on his wattles, but only a small scratch and not much blood. I was outside almost all afternoon with the chickens doing various chores and no fights broke out. I’ve made a few changes to their schedule to avoid pulling Buddy and Rhett into the same space in the morning and evening, but things are looking up!

Great Sadness

Buddy and Rhett have started fighting. Or, they got into a brawl last night, and while Rhett certainly came out worse for the wear in that fight, he now won’t let Buddy have any peace. I don’t know if Buddy started it and now Rhett wants revenge, or if Buddy’s just decided he’s not going to back down when Rhett runs at him.

I tried locking Buddy in the run, but Rhett tried to fight him through the fencing. I locked Rhett up and Buddy happily went about his business with the ladies. I’ll give them a few days to calm down before we decide what to do, but it’s likely, even if he’s the instigator, Rhett will stay. He’s better with the girls and friendlier to people. 

I don’t know if adding more hens would help, or if the presence of the two juvenile roosters has somehow upset our balance. With the warmer weather, the threat of heat exhaustion in big Marans roosters is real, especially Rhett, since he’s very chunky and black. At least when I get between them they stop fighting, and Rhett has always been easy to catch.

With chickens comes great responsibility. You have to be prepared for illness, injuries, predators, and fights between the peoples. If Buddy gets rehomed, I’ll make sure it’s a good one. He’s a super sweet boy, and he’s gorgeous. Hopefully we’ll find a way to make these guys friends again, but we may be looking at a single rooster flock in the future. 

I’ve been reading a lot of “roosters fight to the death” horror stories on forums. Does anyone have any success or disaster stories about trying to keep roosters from fighting?
