I Kill Giants (2017)

If you see I Kill Giants, it'll likely be at home, for free. Under those circumstances, I suppose I can give it a mild recommendation. This is the kind of film on the cusp of being great. Its obvious reveals and few bits of unnecessary quirkiness bog it down but many will find the emotions within it hard-hitting. Even if you don’t, the central performance by Madison Wolfe is too strong to ignore.

Barbara Thorson (Wolfe) is an introverted teen living with her brother and older sister. Actually, she lives in a fantasy world of her own and anyone who listens to her will be dazed by tales of evil giants. Once they walk away, she resumes setting traps and building weapons to slay them. Her new neighbor Sophia (Sydney Wade) is intrigued, despite never once believing the giants to be real. I mean, how could they be?

Most viewers will foresee the story’s twists coming early on. This failure to surprise is the film’s biggest weakness. I don’t want to give anything away, but there are two significant reveals and, while you may not be able to pinpoint every detail, you kinda know everything about this story within about a half hour. The problem is compounded by the running time. This picture is at least 20 minutes too long. While you wait, there are quite a few things that’ll please. The delicate friendship between Sophia and Barbara, for example, is nice. Both young actresses are convincing. Barbara is way too weird for her own good. Nobody deserves to be bullied the way she does by Taylor (Rory Jackson) and her cronies but she isn’t helping by dressing herself in weirdo clothes. Sophia is new in town, has no friends and like you, is intrigued by the strange girl but keeps her distance. You sense that, should she find someone willing to hang out with her that was more popular, she’d ditch Barbara. While you question how the troubled teen is able to single-handedly set up huge traps for giants - the kind that would make Dutch from Predator blush - their scenes feel real.

While I cannot foresee many feeling strongly enough about I Kill Giants to want to rewatch it - much less call it their favorite film - there are a good number of genuinely emotional moments during the climax. It’s a backhanded compliment but the fact is, this isn’t a film you’ll find particularly memorable and everything aside from Barbara, Sophia and those titular giants are pretty disposable. Even Zoe Saldana as the school counselor doesn’t really add much. As a first full-length feature from Anders Walter, this is nonetheless quite good, a first step for someone who will surely go on to bigger and better things, much like the talented cast.
