6. A Kiss of Relief - narumayo

It was a hard fought courtroom battle, but Phoenix and Athena has managed to pull it off. With Athena at the helm and Phoenix helping her out, the defendant ended up getting not guilty after a full three days.

They were both exhausted and made their way back to the defendant's lobby where their client waited.

"Th-Thank you so much, Mr. Wright and Ms. Cykes! Without you two... I'd certainly be in jail right now!" She cried out and wiped her eyes with her handkerchief.

Phoenix just nodded and stared at the woman's father.

He was a foreboding man, standing at a staggering six foot six. A scar went across his face, a story in which Phoenix wants nothing to do with. There was just one thing he truly wanted in return for the acquittal.

"Where's Maya? You promised if I helped your daughter out Maya would be safe." He glanced around the room. "I don't see her, Mr. Blackwood."

Mr. Blackwood harumphed softly and shook his head. "I did say she would be safe, didn't I? Think of it as motivation to make sure my daughter was innocent, which she was by way. There's no way my darling little girl could ever commit murder."

Phoenix rolled his eyes and crossed his arms. "The evidence and court proceedings were able to show that. Now... Bring back Maya Fey, Mr. Blackwood."

"Of course. I'm a man of my word afterall." With a snap of his fingers, one of the men behind him nodded and made a quick phone call.

Trying to strain to hear, Phoenix focused as hard as he could but couldn't make anything out. So, he gave up and just waited patiently. He sat down on the nearby sofa and tapped at his leg. Phoenix couldn't believe Maya was used to help him do someone's bidding... the only difference is that this person was actually innocent, not like all those years ago regarding Engarde.

He could feel himself being stared at. After a moment, he glanced over and saw Athena frowning slightly at him. Phoenix's brow rose curiously.

"Athena? What's up?" He had an inkling as to why she would stare so intently.

"I know you're upset, Boss... but, they did say they'd keep their promise! Maya should be safe!"

Phoenix deflated and nodded. He knew she could hear into his heart and his true feelings. His feelings for Maya were known and despite them being a couple, they did manage to keep it quite under wraps in public.

"I know that, Athena... I'm just... I'm tired of her getting taken. I swear I'm going to have a heart attack one of these days..."

"It's okay, Mr. Wri-" Athena stopped when the door opened and in came Maya... munching on some fries.

"Maya!"

"Ms. Fey!"

Maya grinned cheekily and waved to the two lawyers. "Hey, guys! They stopped and got me some food! Not gonna lie, this was much better than any other time I got kidnapped!"

Phoenix frowned, a bead of sweat dripped down his temple. "Can we try to not... get kidnapped again?" He was immediately on his feet and walked over to her, wrapping his arms around her and held her close. "Maya... Jeez..."

She smiled softly against the hug and wrapped her arms in return. "Hey, Nick... I'm okay! They treated me well."

"Right..."

Once Athena had gone home, Phoenix and Maya stuck in the office. They sighed happily as they sat together on the sofa, leaning against one another.

After a breather, Phoenix immediately leaned over and kissed Maya on the lips desperately. He was relieved she was okay and back home. He raised a hand to caress her cheek and he deepened the kiss.

Maya sighed happily against the kiss and released a muffled sound once he made the contact even stronger. Her eyes fluttered open and she pushed Phoenix away. She blinked a few times and her brow rose curiously. "Nick? Are you okay?"

His own eyes opened slowly and he blinked slowly. "Uh... Yeah. ... No. I'm not. I just... I can't believe you were used to get me to do something for some questionable people... I thought I was going to lose you again if I didn't get an acquittal."

She smiled gently and raised her own hand to caress his cheek in return. "Yeah, but... she was actually innocent! You would have gotten her off even if I wasn't taken!" Maya leaned over to kiss his nose then his free cheek and soon rested her forehead against his.

Phoenix closed his eyes, a single tear fell, and he sighed shakily. "I'm tired of them using you against me." He put a bit more pressure into their forehead touch. "I'm just glad you're okay, Maya..."

"Nick..." Maya pulled away and looked at him. "You have ever single right to feel this way. But... don't worry. I'm fine, they didn't do anything to me. They treated me quite well, actually! Kept me fed and entertained with games!" She grinned cheekily.

He couldn't help but chuckle. "Don't ever change, Maya..."

"Of course I won't!" she grinned and leaned in to kiss him gently once again.

Phoenix returned the kiss just as gently and sighed happily. Maya's safe and sound right here with him and he plans on keeping it that way.

Fun fact: Ive had this idea for a Mia Fey Lives Au for YEARS (inspired by fanart i once saw that was NOTHING like this lmao) and AABingo is my excuse to finally get it down somewhere. Basically, it’s an Au where while Mia lives, someone else dies in her place <3

Excerpt Ive shared with some friends and my sibling who have all said it’s fucked up I’m doing this lmao:

The arms around her tense, and Wright pulls away. He stares, lips pursed tight as he's unable to look her in the eye. "Y-You're…" He takes a deep breath, his fists tightening on her mattress. "You're currently accused of… of murder," he states.

"Murder…?" Mia groans, her body complaining as she sits up. She bites back a wince, pushing past the pain and soreness. "W-Who…? Who died…?"

Wright hesitates. He bites his lip. "Is… Are you related to a 'Maya' by any chance…?"

And Mia's heart drops.

She barely remembers what happens next. She remembers screaming. She remembers the beeping of the heart monitor going faster. She remembers nurses rushing in, Wright speaking to her and gripping her shoulders, trying to calm her down.

She can't say she's calm when she's back in her right mind, but the buzzing of her pounding mind comes to a still, Wright's arms tight around her once more as tears and snot drip down her face.
