“ you see , it’s still not enough. it’s not enough. ”
‘ so i see someone is a terrible lover , hm ? ’
@rosefated asked — ❛ kiyoko-san ... you're beautiful. ❜
she’s only shelling peas , she thinks. there’s nothing inherently beautiful in a task so simple and mundane. her fingertips ache from the repetitive process of pinching at a pea stem , stripping it down the middle , and prying the sides apart. perhaps she was a bit too rough at first , pinching hard enough to bruise the pads of her index fingers over time. it makes her pause periodically to give her hands some respite , but when she starts again , mamo-kun’s comment forces out a pause. a half-shelled pea in still in-hand , hovering over the kitchen counter where she discards the green casings.
shimizu raises her eyes slowly , hiding her surprise with the same flat expression she’d shown towards the peas. the tips of her ears have flushed red , though , and she considers for a moment whether or not they’d be noticeable if she’d decided to uncharacteristically cook with her hair down instead. it’s too late for that , though , isn’t it ? she has to face him normally.
but even so , it takes a moment to respond. shimizu finds herself disjointedly searching for a proper reply , and on the outside it probably looks as though she’s buffering like an online video. her lips purse— silently— and she reaches towards him to smudge a bit of stringy pea stem from his face. she’s decided that she doesn’t really know how to reply , and her reaction comes off stiff and awkward : “ ah … and mamo-kun has … something on his face too. ”

sunflower : what brings your muse the most joy in life ?
i wrote a headcanon on my original blog about shimizu’s most impactful life decision in canon , and said that it was probably her choice to start track and field in middle school and then to join on as the manager of the volleyball club in high school. both of these experiences had rocky starts for her , since she wasn’t the most dedicated runner and she wasn’t the most educated manager , but they grew to be times where she looks back and thinks she learned a lot.
she learned more about herself through these experiences , and came to think of them as periods of self-discovery and personal growth that she couldn’t attribute to anything else. though after high school ( in mainverse ) she doesn’t revisit either , she did learn a few key lessons that helped her find joy elsewhere.
in particular , shimizu came to appreciate nurturing— if it can be called that. in track and field , she nurtured her own ability by practicing harder , and in volleyball she nurtured a team that grew up to go to nationals. she was never very social before and learned that part of being in a sport involves socializing and supporting others. in that regard , i think it brought shimizu a lot of joy to be able to call herself a teammate and a friend , and she certainly learned how to better interact with people outside of her circles. that nurturing also taught her responsibility , and that dedication to your tasks is important for success. she’d never set very clear goals for herself before because she wasn’t sure what she wanted to accomplish , but she came to love watching others set goals for their performance. ( i won’t go over it here , but shimizu loves people who set goals for themselves and have strong ambitions ). furthermore , she learned to appreciate watching people and things grow over time. karasuno’s success took three years of her life to end where it did , and if shimizu had left the team as the manager she might not have been able to watch it grow. but at the end of her high school life , when she looked back on the team , she felt that most of her joy from high school had come from watching them grow.
all of this , of course , is just a round-about way of me explaining that shimizu’s joy has always stemmed from feeding into her own curiosity and sticking with it. she didn’t devote much to track and field despite her curiosity in it , and so she didn’t enjoy it enough to continue in high school. but there’s still something invariably pleasing to her about letting her curiosity get the better of her ... just so she can experience something new and watch it blossom. although volleyball is the most obvious example , shimizu also gets a spark of joy from less significant things like trying a new flavor of chip or taking a new route to work/school. she’s not restless— and this joy doesn’t come from ‘ stumbling upon something excited unexpectedly ’— rather , she finds small bits of happiness in feeding her curiosity , watching them grow to be something fascinating , and repeating the cycle. they’re not what people would normally consider sources of joy since they’re all quite small and unassuming , but shimizu prefers to keep herself busy with small things often rather than to constantly be searching for a greater , longer spark of joy.
💘 sending her off home
SHE’S GLAD THAT once they’ve passed beyond the school gates, one world seems to shut off and another to turn on. if she’s not on school grounds, her classmates won’t find her to ask her for a copy of her notes. her senpai from the track and field team won’t be able to stop her after practice and question her about her handsome boyfriend— ‘ the one with the striking eyes, you know who we mean ! ’ her other admirers won’t elect to walk her back home. and shimizu won’t have to go home alone, wondering how chiba-san is doing until she can get to her desk and send him a text. outside of school, she gets a moment with him all to herself.
that is, until they reach the gates of her own house, and their world must shut off again. shimizu slips her hand from his, feeling her fingers immediately flex in the lack of warmth, and stops just before the gap in her family’s gate. it’s not that her family disapproves of her boyfriend, or that seeing him would give them reason to scold her. they like chiba-san just as much as she does. but shimizu prefers to keep her family and her relationship separate for the time being. she doesn’t need her grandmother to watch her kiss boys just outside their home, and she’s sure that chiba-san doesn’t need to be watched by all the eyes beyond the front windows.
it’s fine this way, isn’t it ? she thinks to ask, but decides against it. maybe asking would only cause him to worry. rather than upset the delicate balance of their romance— outside the school gates and outside her family gates— shimizu figures that it’s better not to question things. their world doesn’t need to be convoluted with ever-changing rules. they can simply feel things out along the way.
“ thank you, ” she nods her head to him to acknowledge that she’s grateful for the escort. but beyond those words, shimizu says nothing more. her glasses begin to slide up the bridge of her nose as she leans her head back and rises to meet his height, giving chiba-san a chaste good night kiss before parting. “ ne … will you text me when you’re home, too ? ”

📝 : they have a cute track and field romance thing ... picture these : when their respective teams finish practice and head home, sometimes they’ll stay on for each other to practice and give extra pointers. mamoru was scolded by his senpai once for practicing relays with someone from the girls’ track and field team ( since this isn’t the school sports day and we can’t do co-ed relays at official meets ! practice with someone on our team ! ). meanwhile, kiyoko just has to bat away some of the gossip from her senpai who see her helping someone from the boys’ team with his stretches/helping him press his leg muscles to keep from cramping. it’s kind of an unspoken rule that they always offer each other a hand to stand up after falling, and by now kiyoko is used to the familiar appearance of mamoru’s hand in her peripheral when she trips ... she thinks it’s comforting, even if she never says so. after practices, they get different flavors of ramune and split/share them with each other. they sit on the track drinking their little soda bottles and watching the sun go down until it gets chilly and they have to go home. but they do it another day, and then another day, so it never really ends :)
