Facial Signature by Japanese photographer Tomoko Sawada is an encompassing exhibition, commanding of space and time, nuanced with differences in cosmetics and character dispositions in each portrait. The 300 self-portraits of Tomoko explore the cultural projection of generalized ethnicity which has been, by far, too economized to serve justice the vast difference between women in the South Eastern Asian area. Tomoko is exploring those aesthetic differences of women with her own transformation. She is Japanese but was often regarded as Mongolian, Taiwanese, Chinese, only to mention a few, during her time spent in New York City. After 3 years of contextualizing the concept, Tomoko completed the project entirely in only 10 days of photographing herself. 99.9999% of humans share the same genes. Aesthetics are what differentiates us, at least on our surface.
Hats off to ROSEGALLERY in Santa Monica for the groundbreaking installation. It was an honor to have been a part of this exhibition of this work. © Tomoko Sawada / Photography by Elizabeth Cara
I spend my days at ROSEGALLERY in The Bergamot Station.
Her First Meteorite, at ROSEGALLERY, is a wonderful selection of photographic collages by Carolle Benitah, James Gallagher, Melinda Gibson, Ken Graves, Stéphanie Solinas, Annegret Soltau, and Grete Stern. The work included in the exhibition ranges in time period from the late 1940′s to present day. Each of the photographers included brings a unique perspective to the different ways a photograph can be altered to create an effective image.
This exhibition closes 11/28/15.
